Throughout Wall Street history, there have been a handful of traders who have reached legendary status. They inspired a generation of traders with outstanding results as well their willingness to teach others how to follow in their footsteps.

Names like Jesse Livermore, Richard Dennis, Bernard Baruch, and Ed Seykota come quickly to mind.

Another name that has reached Hall of Fame status in trading is Nicolas Darvas.

Nicolas Darvas was just an “average Joe” making his living as a traveling ballroom dancer in the 1950s when he turned his attention to stock trading. Over a period of just 18 months in the late 1950s, Darvas turned his personal trading account of $30,000 into a fortune of $2.25 million.

Darvas would be the focus of a Time Magazine article and would eventually write several bestselling books, most notably “How I Made $2,000,000 in the Stock Market” – a book that remains a Wall Street classic, found on the bookshelf of numerous professional traders.

Nicolas Darvas’ success undoubtedly inspired a generation of traders.

But perhaps much more significant than Darvas’ personal success in the market was the success of those who learned from his teachings and mastered his strategy.

There are many “Darvas Millionaires” who credit Nicolas Darvas and his stock trading system with their success and this article will give you a snapshot of just a few of the more famous Darvas-influenced people who have traded their way to millions and recommended Darvas’ teachings to others who wish to do the same.

William O’Neil

William O’Neil is probably the most famous name on this list of Darvas Millionaires.

From 1962-1963, O’Neil took a $5,000 account and turned it into $200,000. He used his winnings to buy a seat on the NYSE and never looked back. He would later become the founder of the highly-respected financial newspaper, Investors Business Daily, and the powerful investment website, Investors.com.

O’Neil lists Nicolas Darvas as one of his trading strategy’s primary influences and recommends that all traders learn from his teachings.

Dan Zanger

Beginning in 1999, over a period of less than two years, Dan Zanger turned his $10,000 account into $42 million. His amazing story garnered national attention, but what wasn’t surprising was the method he used to produce such phenomenal returns.

Zanger quickly become somewhat of a celebrity in trading circles and his advice was highly sought after. He recommended Darvas’ strategy and told traders that the Darvas System is, “widely used and followed today by the best traders in the world, and still this breakout method is little understood by most…”

His statement could not have been more accurate.

Zanger is still a big advocate of Darvas’ teachings and he tells traders that applying the Darvas method will “yield fortunes beyond the reader’s wildest dreams.”

Zanger was listed by Trader Monthly magazine as one of the top 100 traders in the world with an annual income of $25 million!

David Ryan

David Ryan got started with a $20,000 account in 1982. He more than doubled this account in less than one year.

This quick success gave Ryan the confidence to enter the prestigious U.S. Investing Championship in 1985. He won the event with a return of 161%. To prove that his performance was not a one-hit wonder, he entered the competition again in 1986 and, despite finishing in second place, achieved a gain of 160%.

Ryan ended up winning the event twice and from 1985-1987, he produced a compounded return of 1,379%!

Not surprisingly, Ryan credits Darvas as being a major influence on his trading method.

Gary Smith

In 1985, a nearly bankrupt Gary Smith took a meager $2,200 and turned it into an account that now produces annual profits of more than $190,000.

How did he get started? He credits Nicolas Darvas for having the most impact on his career as a full time trader.

Gil Morales

In 1999, Gil Morales wowed investment circles with a one-year return of 971%! But how did he do in the bear market that followed? In the period ending from 1998 through 2005, Morales achieved a total return of 10,904.25%!

Today, Morales is a sought-after fund manager and publicly recommends that investors learn from Nicolas Darvas’ teachings.

Ced Moses

Ced Moses made a big name for himself when he entered and won the 1991 U.S. Investing Championship with a record-setting return of 379%! He would go on to start his own hedge fund where triple-digit returns became the norm and he was named to Nelson’s list of The World’s Best Money Managers.

Who does he credit as a major influence on his trading strategy? You guessed it, Nicolas Darvas.

Timothy Sykes

When Timothy Sykes was 18, he took his Bar Mitzvah gift of $12,415 and started trading with it. In just three years, at the age of 21, Sykes had traded that small account into a $1.65 million fortune. He would go on to start his own hedge fund, which quickly became one of the top-rated funds in the Barclays Fund Rankings.

Sykes lists Nicolas Darvas as a key influence on his trading approach and states succinctly that Darvas’ system is “timeless” and that despite the fact that Darvas created his system in the late 1950s, “his technique still works to this day.”

What They ALL Have in Common

These prolific traders all became well-known for achieving seemingly impossible returns in a very short period of time. They all started with relatively small accounts and turned them into fortunes. And they all have one thing in common: their tremendous respect for the teachings of Nicolas Darvas.

Perhaps this is something more than a coincidence. Perhaps Nicolas Darvas truly deserves recognition as a Hall of Fame trader.

Many aspiring authors spend hours and hours, alone behind their computers tap, tap, tapping away. Then those hours turn into months, and of course, the months slip into years.

This is admirable. If I’m confident of anything, it’s that to be an author you have to be willing to spend hours of your life equivalent to entire years out of your life slaving away writing. I’m just for sure that you need to read at least just as much.

One thing that gets unfortunately overlooked by many is that you also have to be willing to leave your books and your computer behind sometimes. To engage others.

Not that you can’t be an introvert. Thousands of widely regarded successful authors were introverts. That’s is because in some way or another they were able to overcome, albeit sometimes only briefly, their restrictions and step outside of their comfort zones.

That’s because while writing can take many forms; journaling, hobbies writing, personal letter writing. Authorship is a profession, and that means that it falls within a business structure. No matter how sincerely you believe that Jack Kerouac went from nothing to a fantastic book within two weeks of boozing (which FYI, in reality, he didn’t). If you want to move books from shelves, you will need to approach the task earnestly. With a humble attitude that is open to working with others.

The business of writing, designing, editing, publishing, marketing, and selling your books requires a multitude of strangers. Regardless of whether you have a small budget, or you’re JK Rowling.

In fact, the small your budget, the approach is better suited to involving a large number of people each with small, potentially volunteer style task. For instance, having friends complete a narrative edit before giving it to a professional editor, to reduce the amount of paid time the editor has to spend on the manuscript.

For your first book, I highly suggest having a strong group of people who can offer various products, services, and insights to help you stay focused, motivated, and up-to-speed on the ever-changing self-publishing landscape.

Being a successful author requires a lot more than just writing a great book. You have to get into the weeds, be willing to change out of your writer’s cap and into a variety of other hats depending on where you are in the process.

You may not have the skills or willingness to tackle everything with your own two hands, and that’s why it’s so important to develop your own file of go-to resources along the way.

Here are 30 more resources to tap into along the way!

While this list is mostly self-publishing focused, if you’re going the traditional publishing route, you should still have a rigorous shift through them to make sure you are familiar with what is out there.

Useful Blogs and Sites

1. The Write Life

This workhorse blog is a one-stop-shop offering all you need to figure out how to work with clients, navigate the changing landscape of publishing, learn the ins and outs of social media, grow a following for your blog and find a community that will support you along the way. You’ll always find something useful for your book business here. Try not to get lost in the rabbit hole though. There is so much helpful information here I try to time my visits to make sure I’m not eating into my writing time!

2. Kindlepreneur

If you want to dig deep into the goulash of marketing your books, Dave Chesson of Kindlepreneur is your man. His strategies are groundbreaking. Every successful author has to wear many hats, and Dave shares his years of marketing experience and success to show you how to promote the heck out of your books.

3. The Book Designer

Joel Friedlander, the creator of The Book Designer, says “Writers change the world one reader at a time. But you can’t change the world with a book that’s still on your hard drive or in a box under your bed.” This embodies the Community Writer mentality. Joel gives you everything you need to get your book out of the box with a variety of self-publishing guides, advice, templates, and toolkits. With his experience in book design and advertising, Joel has the creds to help you produce and sell a great-looking book.

4. The Creative Penn

The Creative Penn is run by Joanna Penn, who has been wildly successful with fiction and nonfiction. In her blog and podcast, she covers every aspect of what it takes to start and run a successful author business. She also has a grab bag of books on various self-publishing topics if you can’t get enough on her blog.

5. Jane Friedman’s website

Jane has more than 20 years of experience in the book and magazine publishing industry, with expertise in digital media and the future of authorship. Her site is full of actionable content and detailed strategies for the aspiring author from someone who’s been there and done that many times over.

Podcasts Worth Your Time

6. Podcast – Neuralle (Uncommon)

Please forgive the shameless self-promotion here, but aside from the fact that I will be most likely appearing on this podcast at some point, Neuralle is a fantastic self-development podcast and in my humble opinion a must for any aspiring author or entrepreneur.

Past guests have included Venture Capitalists, Entrepreneurs, Chefs, Restaurant Owners, Body Builders, Strength Coaches, Activists, Winemakers, Filmmakers and many, many more.

7. Tim Ferris Podcast

This show is the first publishing-related podcast that I followed, and it’s still an all-time favourite. It’s hosted by Tim Ferris an American best-selling author, entrepreneur, self-proclaimed “human guinea pig”, and public speaker.

8. Grammar Girl Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing

Every green writer should bookmark this podcast. With helpful and insightful tips on grammar and storytelling, Mignon Fogarty’s podcast is sure to help you improve your narrative and technical writing skills.

9. The Writer Files

Hosted by Kelton Reid, The Writer Files is a long-running podcast that delves deep into habits and habitats of famed writers. Reid interviews writers from a broad spectrum, giving each listener a chance to see into the mind of an accomplished wordsmith within their genre or interest.

Forums

10. Neil Gaiman Board

Neil Gaiman’s Official Message Board. Enough said.

11. Goodreads Groups

Goodreads is the mega-site (with over 20 million members) for authors and readers. They have more specific groups than you can count, and if you can’t find an answer or inspiration here, then it doesn’t exist. You might feel a bit overwhelmed, but here’s a smart article on using Goodreads to support your author business.

12. Scribophile

There are tons of writing forums out there to choose from, so I suggest you have a play with a few of them. This one works a bit differently which is why I like it though. Scribophile provides detailed and helpful critiques from a member exchange. The analyses you’ll get are so much more than just a pat on the back – you’ll get actionable ways to improve your writing.

Writing Tools

13. Scrivener

Scrivener is a powerful writing tool for authors that allows you to concentrate on composing and structuring your documents. Get a free 30-day trial and watch some brief YouTube tutorials to get acquainted with the system quickly.

14. Grammarly

This proofreading application is an improved version of your standard spellchecking program. Just copy and paste blocks of text into Grammarly, and it will check your writing for common mistakes. The reason it’s better than most spellcheckers is that it provides useful feedback that will improve the overall quality of your book. You will learn a lot very quickly by taking heed of the side bar suggestions and explanations.

15. Hemingway Editor

Excellent writing is quite often straightforward writing, and Hemingway was the master at that. Whether you’re writing fiction or nonfiction, your narrative should get to the point with simple language. With the He
mingway software, you will learn how to simplify your writing.

Book Publishing and Freelance Help

16. Archangel Ink

Archangel Ink is a one-stop solution for getting your book ready to publish. Archangel offers a range of services to help you with cover design, editing, formatting, audiobook production and much more. I feel that if you haven’t published before you learn a lot by manually going through the process of completing your manuscript via Scrivner, finding editors/cover creators via say Reedsy/Freelancer and then uploading it to KDP/Createspace. However it can be frustrating, so I completely understand throwing down some cash and handing of some or all of this to someone else. I’m currently considering using Archangel Ink to produce and audiobook for me.

17. 99 Designs

This is a service where you post a design project, like your book cover, and dozens of freelancers submit mock-up examples. You then select finalists based on the submissions and choose the winner to work with you to create a finalised version. 99Designs can be pricey, but it’s a great option if you want a professional cover design for your book.

18. Grammarly

I won’t rant on this too much as already do that frequently enough if you don’t have the free version of this you need to get it now. What some of you might not know, is that via the paid version they have an option to connect you with a professional proof reader. I haven’t used this before but considering the calibre of everything else they do I think it’s worth investigating.

19. Freelancer

One the most significant websites for hiring freelance talent. If you want to find the largest pool of people, then this is a great place to look. The app makes chatting with prospective freelancers seamless so you can manage your project and selection of the perfect candidate on the go.

20. Reedsy

Reedsy offers a boutique experience in editing and cover design. Most freelancers here have worked in the publishing industry, so they have a thorough understanding of what will work for your books. But you should also expect to pay more for the freelancers you find here. If you’re going the self-publishing route within fiction, a professional editor is a must, an absolute necessity, seriously. Reedsy is a great way to find one, with almost every budget available. If you can’t afford the lower tier, I suggest saving your pennies or going the traditional publishing route, where a publisher will provide you a professional editor to work with.

Getting Feedback

21. Survey Monkey

Is an easy to use survey builder; ask multiple choice questions and get demographic information about your audiences, like age, sex, or occupation. You can use it for your current email list, or post a survey with a lead magnet somewhere your target audience will see it (forums, pay-per-click ad etc.)

22. PickFu

PickFu allows authors to get instant feedback on your book before you publish using audience polls. This is a more advanced option for those who already have income streams, again I don’t suggest paying for a resource unless you’ve used a free version and had equitable success with it.

Email Marketing

23. AWeber

With a drag and drop email builder, unlimited image storage and an easy to use interface, AWeber is a great option to manage your email marketing communication.

24. MailChimp

MailChimp offers 12,000 emails to 2,000 subscribers – free. That’s what MailChimp can do for you. A great email marketing resource if you’re just getting started. MailChimp is easy to set up, easy to manage and offers an easy to scale pricing plan as your list grows. As the Wix email option ‘Shoutout’ has a capped number of emails you can send but an exportable email list. You can use MailChimp to send additional emails if you are pushing the boundaries of the free Wix option.

25. Constant Contact

You can’t call yourself constant contact and then not be available to your customers. And that’s just what makes this email automation company shine. They offer round the clock support 7 days a week. They also offer 60-day FREE trial.

26. SpyFU

Search for any domain and see every place they’ve shown up on Google: every keyword they’ve bought on AdWords, every organic rank, and every ad variation in the last 11 years. This combined with Wix’s seamless SEO makes key words unbelievably easy. You don’t need to have some ten years long.

Learn how to connect with these domains, too. Find online and traditional leads methods — social media, email, phone, and address — you can’t find anywhere else. So you can look at other authors within your niche and find out exactly where readers are going to find them.

Staying Organized

27. Google Keep

Keep is an excellent organisation tool. It stores every idea, research plan and content structure. Which can quickly be dumped into Scrivner later.

28. Evernote

Another option this is with a few more features is Evernote, you can save snippets of content you find online and go back to all of it in a searchable, taggable easy to find notebooks on Evernote. It also connects to my Google Home via IFTTT which frustratingly Google Keep doesn’t seem to, so I can handsfree keep notes easily.

29. Google Drive

Accessible from anywhere with internet, Google Drive is a great collaborative tool for teams to use when you’re working with content, files, or images in tandem. Google Sheets and Google Docs makes group work seamless, and all work can easily be shared with hyperlinks.

30. Tomato Timer

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management strategy preferred by many authors. It’s not always easy to keep track of the non-writing tasks related to your book projects. With Brain Focus Productivity Timer, an excel sheet (or just pen and paper) and Scrivner’s session tracking you can keep motivated with tangible evidence of how hard you’re working. Not only time associated with the project. Team Viz is another excellent paid alternative to this method, and you can’t forget the simple Tomato Timer (tomato-timer.com)

31. Slack

It’s like super chat. Instant communication. Instant file transfer. Indexed and Searchable. It is fantastic for collaboration if you have a specific project you are working on. Again, use wisely, if you are co-authoring for example. Not if you’re just working with a freelancer for a short time, instead use the platform’s chat for content protection!

32. Lander App

You can learn more about A/B testing here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A/B_testing

I have experimented with A/B testing in the past but didn’t feel that it was hugely beneficial. I think that you have to have a relatively sophisticated reason to use A/B testing. Potentially I’ll use this for a book launch with a landing page in the future. Of those that I experimented with, I found Lander App to be the most straightforward to use.

Again, if you don’t know what A/B testing doesn’t worry, you don’t need to! Don’t jump to trying to use A/B testing, focus instead on the following:

– Mailing list Opt-in rate

– You unique visitor Site traffic

– Total engagement (comments, email responses) / Book Sales

For the third point there, you concentrate on engagement if you haven’t released your first book yet!

Website Hosting

33. Freenom – A Name for Everyone

One of my favourite hosting companies, if you’re just starting out, I don’t suggest spending any money on anything if you can avoid it. This is perfect for this, as instead of choosing a.com or a.net you can get a free domain and easily swap with redirection later once you’re profitable. Personally, I use Wix for all website things, but this is an excellent option if you’re just starting out.

34. WP Engine

WP Engine is a hosting company that provides managed WordPress hosting for websites around the world. They have great support, and their servers help your WordPress
site run a top speed. I use Wix as I find it far more user-friendly, however, the advanced features do require a minimum annual cost. With WordPress, most features can be scaled up for free, but a bit more mucking around with add-ons and tech stuff.

Ever wonder what the fuss about happiness is all about? Ever wonder why the writers of the U.S. Constitution said that the pursuit of happiness is an inalienable right?

Interestingly, happiness studies have exploded over the last few years. It seems like new books on the subject are popping up regularly. The volume of research-based, best-selling books indicates that this is a topic that people are very interested in, though the interest can hardly be thought of as new. Even the Founding Fathers had it in mind!

In The Pursuit of Happyness, Chris Anderson (played by Will Smith) is continually frustrated by his son’s daycare, who can’t get the word happiness right.

Have you been feeling like you can’t get happiness right either? How hard is it to be happy anyway?

There are a number of things that have been shown to make people happy. The ingredients are all pretty simple and it is fairly easy to identify ones that are missing. For instance, not having enough money to take care of your family’s basic needs. Having family members in crisis. Lacking specific goals to change outcomes. These are things that make us unhappy.

We Can All Identify Things That Are Contributing to Unhappiness

So why do many people still, at least mostly, feel happy? Why does hope and optimism continue to rise even when many of the basic ingredients are missing?

Is there anything you can do to fan this little spark of happiness into a flame? Does it even matter if you are happy? Current research in the field of positive psychology offers insights into these questions.

Shawn Achor is a former Harvard professor and the current CEO of Good Think Inc., a Cambridge-based consulting firm which conducts research to understand where human potential, success and happiness intersect.

According to Achor, “We’re finding it’s not necessarily the reality that shapes us, but the lens through which your brain views the world that shapes your reality. And if we can change the lens, not only can we change your happiness, we can change every single educational and business outcome at the same time”

If You Can Change Your Lens, Will You Change Your Life?

Research conducted by Achor indicates that a positive brain is 31% more productive than a negative, neutral or stressed brain. According to Achor, raising your present level of positivity allows your brain to experience what is called a happiness advantage. This simply means that your intelligence, creativity and energy levels increase.

This indicates that not only do you need to change your lens, but you specifically need to make your lens more positive. There’s more to this good news. When you are positive, dopamine floods your system, not only making you happier (and counteracting stress hormones), but also turns on all of the learning centers in your brain!

Sign Me Up! What Do I Need to Do?

Happily, Achor gives several ways you can rewire your brain in just a couple minutes per day. You can do one or several. Each will help increase your happiness.

• The first is gratitude. The exercise is to write three new things you are grateful for every day for 21 days (no repeating of things you are grateful for). This retrains your brain to look for positive things instead of negative.

• Second, journal about one positive experience per day.

• Third, teach your brain that behavior matters by exercising.

• Fourth, meditate – which allows your brain to relax and unplug from multitasking.

• Finally, Achor recommends practicing conscious acts of kindness, such as writing one positive email to a friend or relative each day.

Haven’t We Always Wanted to Be Happy?

Even the Mayo Clinic has an article about how to be happy. They recommend investing in relationships, practicing gratitude, cultivating optimism, finding your purpose, and living in the moment. Many of the same things that Achor’s research has found to be helpful in increasing happiness. There are even (research-based) happiness quizzes so you can see how happy you are. Some even track your happiness level over time!

I hate feeling unhappy, depressed, or anxious. In fact, I try to avoid triggers that are going to make me feel this way, like news reports (which are all pretty much negative). However, when circumstances in my life cause me to experience all three of these emotions, I know I need to take a step back. It is easy to spot a general sense of negativity and gloom because it seems to lodge in the middle of my chest. This definitely affects happiness, or more accurately, unhappiness. The good news is that happiness doesn’t have to be tied to circumstances.

Do you want greater happiness? There are research-based solutions that can literally change your mind. All you have to do is implement some of these strategies. If you want a quick resource for putting all five of the recommendations to work for you in just five minutes, get it free HERE. Even turning up the happiness a small amount would make a difference.

If you haven’t seen Shawn Achor’s Tedx Talk, I highly recommend it. You can find it here.

The late, Gary C. Halbert, is my favorite copywriting mentor. Not only was he ultra-successful but he could teach the art and science of crafting ad copy like nobody’s business.

One of the things I learned from Gary is the importance of making things easy on yourself. For example, let’s say you want to write an eBook on losing weight.

What should you do?

Should you study weight loss science? Should you spend years doing clinical trials? Should you roam the world looking for the perfect diet plan or diet pill? Well not really. Because there is a much easier way to access the most cutting edge weight loss science, clinical trials and new diet breakthroughs. Without doing all the work yourself. Curious? Then listen to this.

Instead of doing things the hard way, Gary would recommend you go out and buy the top selling books and ebooks on dieting. Then you clam up in your office or the library and read. While reading jot down notes. Lots of them. And take out all of the unique, exclusive dieting tips, tricks and secrets in each of those best sellers.

Then you take all that information and write your own dieting book including only the unique and exclusive stuff from each book. The stuff that does not overlap. What you are left with is a compact book on dieting with all the filler taken out.

Smart.

Gary also taught that you should do the same thing when writing ads. Especially if you’re in a hurry and need to bang out an ad… website letter… or whatever fast.

The technical term for this copywriting technique is called… swiping. And boy does it ever work! Gary even held an entire seminar on copywriting. The bulk of that seminar focused on how to swipe blockbuster ads ethically and legally.

Look, if you don’t want to become a top notch copywriter and don’t have time to learn all the formulas, etc. then swiping is the way to go. All you have do is learn how to do it right.

When you do, here’s what’ll happen as a result…

** You’ll eliminate writer’s block forever. Because now you’ll access a starting point for your ads. You won’t be guessing at what to write. The swipes reveal exactly what to write in your ads to make them effective and responsive.

** You’ll write promotions at warp speed. Swiping allows you to write faster. Again, part of the reason is because you won’t have to guess. You can look at a great ad and almost fill in the blanks with your copy.

** Your copy will be up to 300% more effective. Whenever you model success the odds of success are on your side. When modeling a successful ad you stand a much better chance of writing a winner.

The moral of the story is: start swiping.

Finding the right topic for your eBook can be hard if you go about it the wrong way. Today we are going to cover how to do it the right way and do it fast so you can spend your time writing, not doing research.

What you want is a topic that is both interesting to you as a writer and profitable to you as a marketer. But the first step is to find a topic that your target audience will be interested in learning more about and buying your eBook from you.

Before you do any research, go ahead and grab a pen and piece of paper or notebook. Keep it handy when you go online to do research and make sure you write down every topic that comes to mind. Omit nothing at this point and just write it all down. You will figure out what to eliminate later.

What Are Your Passions and Interests?

The best place to start looking for an eBook topic is your own skills, interests and passions. There is a very high chance that one of your passions will be shared with millions of other people. These people are doing thousands of internet searches on that topic each and every day.

What Are You Good At?

Closely linked to finding a subject related to your passion or interest is to look at what you are good at. Are you good at making people laugh or connecting with people online? Do you have a great relationship with a spouse or a loved one?

Did you accomplish a goal you are proud of in the past ten years? All these things are something you have a great deal of knowledge about and people will pay you to teach them about it.

What Pays the Bills Now?

What do you do for a living? That subject or area just might be the best place to find an eBook topic to write about. People are always interested in self-development and want to improve their skills in their profession.

At this point, do not dismiss the idea of writing about what you do for a living. Even if you think what you do is boring, mundane and could not possibly have a hungry market, you could be wrong and it could cost you a bestseller in the process.

Narrowing Down the List Through Research

Once you have spent a good 30 minutes writing down some possible topics, it is time to narrow down the list. The first thing you should do is head over to Amazon.com and browse through their bestseller list. Which books are selling well and which ones are related to your subject?

Once you have done this, use Google to search for keywords related to your subject. If you cannot think of any keywords (what people type in when searching for information on your topics), then flip through a few magazines or books on the topics. Index pages are a great place to find keywords.

Is There a Market for Your Ebook?

Use Google’s Keyword Search Tool – This will help you find out how many people are searching for those keywords. Just enter a search in Google for “Google Keyword Tool” and it should pop up.

Visit the eBook Bestseller’s List at Clickbank.com – Go to Clickbank.com and you will see that they list out which products sell the best. If your subject is near the top of the list (top 30-40) you have a good topic to write about.

Once you put all of this together and find a subject that interests you, has enough people searching for information about it and has a few bestsellers already, you have a great subject to write about.

Once you have done all this, now comes the fun part, writing about your topic!

If you want to make money writing books, then you need to make sure that your book sales go on for years.

The question though, is how do you do that? How do you make sure that you can keep on selling copies of your books for years to come?

The answer is simple.

You need to write more books that your readers want to read.

And it doesn’t matter if you’re writing fiction or non-fiction. The advice I’m going to give you works for both.

What you need to do is not just write a book, but write a series of books. That way, once someone has read your book, they can come back for more.

The first thing you need to do is plot out your series. Then each book you write has to be a complete book in itself (needs a satisfactory ending or conclusion) plus it needs to keep your readers hungry for more.

If you write fiction, then it’s easy to write an ongoing saga split into a series of books, just like the Harry Potter novels did. Each one was a book on its own, but at the same time, the story of the three main characters, just kept going and going as different problems arose for them in each consecutive book.

If you write non-fiction, then you need to write a series of books all based on the same topic. For instance, if you want to write about dogs, you could write one big generic book, or you could split it down into more detailed books about dog health, dog training, breeding, looking after a puppy, grooming, showing and so forth.

That way, as your reader’s dog grows from puppy to adult, they can keep buying books about how to look after it. And if it’s one of your books that they started with, and you’ve advertised your other books in the back of each one, then chances are good that they’ll stick with the same author.

And it’s the same with fiction. Once your readers get to know and like your main characters, they’ll want to read more about them. Or you could write about different characters but in the same place, like a haunted house that tries to kill people who stay there, or a series of horror books about zombies, or a series of Western novels or romance books.

Once you start thinking about it and researching for ideas, you’ll be amazed at what you can come up with.

But the important thing is to keep writing, publishing and marketing every book you write.

Every year there are dozens of self-help books published in the US. Some are read and soon forgotten and eventually go out of print while others go on to become classics. A classic book is a book accepted as being exemplary or noteworthy and has stood the test of time. This is a list of what I consider to be the best self-help book classics.

5. It Works by RHJ

Though not as well-known as the other books on this list, “IT Works!” was first published as a pamphlet in 1926 and has been in print ever since. The author is listed only as RHJ and it was found out later that RHJ was Roy Herbert Jarrett and little is known about him other than he was born in 1874.

“IT Works!” outlined a simple, workable plan for manifesting your desires by focusing your thoughts. The simple, but powerful blueprint as described in the book can be used to obtain whatever you desire, by focusing your thoughts, and has brought happiness and fulfillment to many. Virtually all books on goal setting and mind control published since “It Works!” have followed the same basic ideas. And there is no better proof of validity than imitation!

4. The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason

The Richest Man in Babylon started out as a series of pamphlets designed to teach financial prosperity and were distributed in large quantities by banks and insurance companies; the pamphlets were bound together and published in book form in 1926. Each pamphlet tells a parable illustrating a different financial skill such as savings, investing, becoming wealthy, etc.

The best known parable is that of Arkad “The Richest Man In Babylon” who is asked by two of his childhood friends how he became wealthy and would he teach them the same. He agrees and share with them how he became wealthy. He tells them that he became rich when he decided that a part of all he earned was his to keep. He paid himself a tenth of all he earned.

If this idea sounds familiar it should many financial writers have adopted this idea most notably David L. Bach best known for his Automatic Millionaire Series of motivational financial books.

3. The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles

The Science of Getting Rich was published in 1910 by the Elizabeth Towne Company. It was written by the New Thought Movement writer Wallace D. Wattles. The book explains how to overcome mental barriers, and how creation, not competition, is the hidden key to wealth attraction.” Each of the seventeen chapters is short and straight to the point.

The Science of Getting Rich preceded similar and equally well known books such as The Master Key System by Charles F. Haanel (1912) and Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (1937). It was a major inspiration for Rhonda Byrne’s bestselling book and film The Secret (2006). In the 100 years since its publication, it has gone through many editions, and remains in print from more than one publisher.

2. The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale

Not a book but a recording of a weekly pep talk given to Nightingales sales force, he owned an insurance agency at the time, The Strangest Secret, earned the first Gold Record for the spoken word, with sales exceeding one million copies.

Nightingale, known as the ‘dean of personal development,’ reveals how he discovered and lived the secret to success. Demand for the recording was so high that Nightingale partnered with Vic Conant to market the recording and credited with starting the self-help/personal development field.

1. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Considered by many to be the greatest self-help book ever published, Hill’s Think and Grow Rich first published in 1937, is the end product of two decades of research conducted by Napoleon Hill.

His research started when Andrew Carnegie (the steel tycoon who was then the richest man on earth) commissioned Hill into organizing a Philosophy of Personal Achievement. Hill, who was a poor journalist, was given a letter of introduction Carnegie and started interviewing over five hundred successful people including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, John D. Rockefeller, George Eastman, William Wrigley Jr. and Charles M. Schwab.

The result of Hill’s research was a correspondence course entitled The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons published in 1928. For over seven years Hill gave lectures based on The Law of Success in practically every city in the US. Think and Grow rich, published in 1937 was based on the earlier The Sixteen Laws of Success and condensed the sixteen laws into 13 principles of personal achievement. By 2011 over 70 million copies of the book have been sold worldwide. BusinessWeek Magazine’s Best-Seller List ranked the book as the sixth best-selling paperback business book and Think and Grow Rich is listed in John C. Maxwell’s A Lifetime “Must Read” Books List.

If you are new to online book selling or just interested in finding out what the profit potential might be you want to be sure you have a realistic view of the market and its potential. I strive to do just that in this article. For the last five years I have been involved as a third party vendor on Amazon.com, Half.com, and other venues and then as a consultant to online booksellers with my daughter and business partner, Carissa. The aim of this article is to discuss the market potential of online selling.

Before we can answer the burning question of how profitable you can be we need to fill in some basic concepts. I will be covering three different markets for books. We will start with the market for new books fresh from the publisher then discuss the market for secondary books or seconds as they are called and finally the used book market. I will discuss sources, wholesale price (what they will cost you as the bookseller), retail price (what you can sell them for online) and how that relates to the business potential.

New Books

Typically new books can be purchased from a wholesaler starting at half the cover price. If you buy in bulk quantity you can get even better pricing. You can then list the books online for a competitive price to ensure you will sell the inventory you purchased while the book is new and the greatest numbers of people want to buy the book. As time progresses the initial demand is met and fewer people remain who want the book. Depending on how many books were published (and the supply / demand ratio) the price may go down, up, or stay the same.

The typical book will be discounted heavily by the retailers who were the largest purchasers of the book when sales start to wane. Since they paid the least for the book they have a wider margin and can still be profitable while discounting the sales price. The more popular the author and the more anticipated the book the quicker the price drops making it less profitable to the retailer. Large retailers will know they are betting on a sure thing and will buy large quantities and sell the book for a large discount from the first day it is on sale. The last few Harry Potter books fit into this category. For less popular books like text books you can actually get the cover price when the book is new. The best case scenario for new books is doubling your money.

Seconds

A retailer who ordered more books than they can sell places the extras back on the wholesale market as seconds hoping to recoup some of their money. If you purchase seconds you are buying books at a greatly discounted price at a time when the book’s retail price is likely to fall quickly. I have done extremely well with seconds in some limited cases. I have purchased a number of books for two dollars and sold them for fifteen dollars online. This was the exception rather than the rule and I typically only did as well as new books. The other factor is I seldom had over three percent of my sales as seconds. The profitable ones are just that scarce. The best case for seconds in my experience was on average to double your money much like new books.

Used Books

The last market is that of used books. The curious thing to me about this market is the relatively unrecognized value of used books. You see them everywhere in yard sales, thrift shops, flea markets, estate sales, church sales, auctions, and many other places. This was how I got started so many years ago. I went to a yard sale and saw a Masters Level text book on astronautical engineering. It looked brand new so I asked what they wanted for it. I bought it for a dollar and listed it on Amazon as an experiment. I sold it within three days for over forty dollars. I figured if I could buy a product for a dollar and sell it for over forty dollars I was in the game. It wasn’t quite that easy as I later found out but that one experience stayed in my mind. I kept careful statistics for the years we sold books online and I can tell you with certainty I am being conservative here. On average we paid one dollar for each book we listed and sold them for over ten dollars each.

In summary, you can see the used book market has huge potential for profit. The economic situation now is making the cheaper used books even more attractive to a wider market than ever before. Even in cases where someone is looking for a gift quality book, many are still purchasing used with a better condition rating. And for the seller, used books are typically cheaper to buy so it takes less capital to get started and the overhead can be quite small while offering the largest profit margins.

In recent times electronic eBooks are becoming evidently more popular for book lovers around the world, as an eBook can be delivered instantly to an E-reader device or home computer. An E-reader is an electronic device that is designed primarily for the purpose of reading digital books. Amazon have released their version of a hand held reading device called the Kindle, similarly Barnes & Noble’s Nook is also capable of allowing the purchase and download of a new book within minutes or seconds. It seems as though eBooks are a new viable alternative to traditional books, however despite its convenience, the eBook has a lot of drawbacks.

First of all E-readers can set you back £200, which before you have even purchased any eBooks is a lot of money. With a lot of printed books setting you back a few pounds, you could purchase dozens before it amounts to the price of an E-reader. Another disadvantage of eBooks is that most commercial eBooks are sold with strict digital rights management (DRM) restrictions upon them, preventing owners from lending or selling books, and sometimes from transferring a book from one device to another of their own. This can be very frustrating when trying to lend a book to friend and it has also led to complaints from book fans that you don’t really own your book, but only lease it from the booksellers for a period of time.

When comparing whether a paper book is more environmentally friendly than eBooks it can be debated as virtual books have no carbon footprint, however in spite of this the E-reader can cause some environmental problems. Its manufacture requires the extraction and burning of fossil fuels to transport to stores or homes. Comparing E-readers with traditional books, up to 100 books would have to be purchased and stored on the E-reader in order for its manufacture to be offset by energy and pollution saved. Overall with eBooks you miss out on the traditional and fun past-time of reading – we all like to go on holiday and read by the pool, but this may not be a practicable option if you’ve got an electronic device holding your books. There are so many online book stores that offer a wide selection of books at great prices that you can always be fully satisfied you’re getting the best reading experience.

When writing and publishing non-fiction books, there’s tremendous earning potential just through book sales. This is particularly true if you become popular in a broad interest topic, and particularly if you’re prolific with your writing and publishing.

However, unlike fiction, non-fiction offers you a huge amount of earning potential beyond simply the sales of books. In fact, in many ways, when a reader buys a book from you, that can be the very start of a customer relationship that can even be worth tens of thousands of dollars in income.

The reason for this is when publishing a non-fiction book, you’re generally solving someone’s problem, or answering someone’s question:

How can I make my garden look better?

How do I get more leads and sales for my business?

How can I get fit and bulk up?

How can I increase the value of my home?

… and so on.

So your book will answer their questions and help solve their problems. And the better the book, the more it starts your relationship with the reader in a positive way.

Of course people who buy your book are interested in the topic. They may be superficially interested, or they may be hugely motivated to dive much deeper into the topic. With such readers, your book is just the start of your relationship with them.

So that’s where your relationship with your readers becomes more of an “information publisher and coach” rather than just an author.

I’ll be talking through five ways you as an author can build an entire portfolio of offers that can increase your income significantly, by turning a simple book publishing business into an information publishing and coaching empire.

Here’s several examples of authors who have done just that:

Dan Kennedy is quite prolific as a book writing, with a focus on helping small businesses with their marketing. But that’s just a tiny percentage of his income.

His books introduce readers to his website, his paid newsletters, his courses, and his consulting. For example, he mentions that just one reader who purchased one of his books from a $1 bargain bin in a store, turned into a client who’s now paid him well over $100,000.

Anthony Robbins is a hugely well known motivational coach who publishes books and these introduce new coaching clients to him. His information and coaching business is vast, and even though the books bring him a small percentage of clients overall (the majority come through infomercials) they’re highly qualified.

Melonie Dodaro publishes a popular book about successfully using LinkedIn to grow your personal and business brand. And that book leads the reader to her website where she offers more in depth courses, in-person coaching, and services.

Of course it’s important to realize that a large percentage of people who get your book will look at it only briefly if at all. It will be a small percentage who really dive into your book and then visit your website, take up the free offer you make to readers in return for their email address (very important!), and then check out your other offers.

However that small percentage will come to you very much sold on your way of communicating, so they’ll be hugely receptive to other offers of yours. In some ways, they’ll transition from your book to your website already fans of yours, and this makes selling to them so much easier than attempting to sell to someone who’s never heard of you before.

Okay, so let’s dive into more detail about ways to turn a book reader into a hugely valuable customer, while at the same time offering tremendous value to them every step of the way (since every time you over-deliver to a customer, it makes them more likely to buy from you again, and to recommend your products and services to others).

Expand on Your Book With In-Depth Training Courses

If the subject you’re writing about is particularly narrow niche, a 100 page book may cover the entirety of the subject. However, most books, even on very niche subjects, can go more in depth and be turned into a fully-fledged training course. And in particular can be communicated in multiple media formats: audio, video, and tool kits (more on this later).

So you need to transition your book readers to your website. A great way to do this is to offer them bonuses if they visit your site at private page (just for book readers) and sign up with their email address. This way, they get access to great bonuses that aren’t available to regular website visitors, and you get their email address for regular follow-up.

And you follow up on them by email with great content, and also some offers (don’t overdo it however of they’ll stop reading your emails). This is a great opportunity to start presenting them with your courses and other offers, and also to encourage them to become a regular reader of your blog by emailing them links to your latest posts (or the best post from the last seven days) once a week.

Now, a training course can be delivered purely online as a download. Or it can be set up as a private member area (more on this in the next section). However, by also sending your customer something physical through the post, you can generally charge quite a bit more as it has a higher perceived value.

Plus, it creates a stronger emotional bond with the customer. Rather than just data on a hard drive, it’s something that has pride of place on their shelves.

So for example, you can deliver everything immediately online, and also send customers:

DVDs with training videos.

CDs with audio.

Printed out and bound manuals and transcripts.

The DVDs and CDs can be very light to post, whereas manual and transcripts can start to get rather heavy. However, the more you deliver, the larger the “Thud Factor” as it’s called. The thud sound you get when a huge package is delivered at your door. So the higher the thud factor, the more perceived value a course can have, so the higher the price.

And with a training course, depending on how in depth it is, the intended target market, and how valuable the subject area is, can sell for anything from $30 to $5,000.

While a $30 course may be introductory, a $5,000 course could be the equivalent of a Masters degree in your subject area, and a percentage of your customers are going to be interested in that if they’ve been happy with previous purchases from you.

Often, offers to customers start at the lower end of prices. And then customer then gets higher priced offers as they purchase more and more products. Whereas other customers may want to jump straight to the most expensive course. So having these all publicly available to buy can be helpful.

So sales of these courses will come from:

Your email list.

Your website traffic.

Promotional partnerships where other sites promote your courses.

Online advertising campaigns.

Making Predictable Income with Membership Sites & Newsletters

A membership site is a private area on your site with fantastic information. Often membership sites also include tools that members can benefit from, and even private discussion areas where members can get in depth answers quickly.

The reason for having a membership site as well as training products is because it’s regularly updated, and can have an interactive element to it. In return the customer pays either monthly or annually to keep access to the site.

And a newsletter is effectively a “real world” version of a membership, where a newsletter, CD, DVD, or combination of these, is sent to the customer once a month. The customer then again either pays monthly, or even annually. And this can be either instead of, or more likely alongside access to a membership site.

Two Examples:

If we return to the example of Dan Kennedy, he has a monthly newsletter that goes out to thousands (more likely tens of thousands) of business owners. He’s said that he consider his newsletter the core of his business, and this alone produces millions in annual revenue for him.

An even more successful example is Lynda.com which was recently sold to LinkedIn for well over a billion dollars. Lynda is a job skills training site that is over 20 years old, and has training videos on hundreds of different subjects.

You’ll find in fact that both of those examples, and with billed monthly offers in general, a free or low-price trial period is required. There’s a resistance by customers to being billed monthly, so you can overcome that resistance with a low-price or free trial so you can prove the value you’re giving them.

And one huge benefit of billing customers monthly (automatically onto their credit card) is it creates very predictable monthly cash flow for your business, which takes a lot of worry out of entrepreneurial life. It also means you have a captive audience that you can promote other products and services too, and since they’re already buying from you, their response rate will be high.

Charge For Your Expertise & Time With Coaching

If you’re an expert in the subject you’re writing about, then beyond just offering books and training products for your audience, you can work with them on a one-to-one basis to answer their questions directly and offer a much more personalized approach.

This could be offered as consulting or personalized training (much the same thing, although they have slightly different connotations), and can be very helpful to clients that are confused about certain areas of your topic, have very specific questions, or just want to move forward quickly.

This is often offered at an hourly rate, or even a day rate, and is generally done remotely over the phone or through Skype, or can sometimes be done in person in certain instances.

You can even take this further if you choose, and actually offer services to customers where you do the work for them. For example, if you published a book on small business marketing, you could offer marketing campaign management for clients, and depending on the size of the project, could cost the client more than $100,000 a year.

The example above of Melonie Dodaro publishing her book about LinkedIn as a lead generator for her business, helps attract clients to her coaching and marketing management services.

Selling Tools is Much Easier Than Selling Information

When selling information, there’s always a resistance from the person you’re selling to as information takes effort to internalize and to implement. That said, if the information is about a hobby the person reading may be truly passionate about it. But for information about solutions to a problem, there likely isn’t that same passion. The easier you can make it, the better.

So if you can find a way to give your customer a tool they can put into action and that solves their problem with minimal effort on their part, that can sell very well. Because in an ideal world, people want things done for them, so the less effort they have to exert to solve a problem, the happier they’ll be.

If you’re selling a training course, you can include tools as part of it. You can then start to present the product as a toolkit which can make selling it a lot easier. Here are examples of tools you can sell as part of a course, or even as their own offers:

Software

“Fill in the blank” templates

Spreadsheets for quick calculations

Quick start guides

Now some tools can take a long time (and a lot of money) to develop, particularly software. So make sure you know your audience well if this a route you’re going to take.

Put Together High-Priced Seminars and Retreats

To maximize your income while at the same time catering to multiple client types, it’s important to have low priced and also high priced offers. One of your lowest priced offers is of course your book.

Then you can offer more in depth information, leading up to high-priced coaching, consulting, services, and tools. And towards the highest end of prices is putting together seminars and retreats where your absolute best and most valuable information is presented to customers.

Plus, people often greatly enjoy the social aspect of seminars, and it can be a fun getaway. It can also be a great way to network with people that have similar interests.

When putting together seminars, you have two main options:

High priced and exclusive.

Low priced with the maximum number of people you can get.

The high priced option may even sell for thousands of dollars, and you may have quite limited seating. This is often offered to your best customers first, so they get first refusal.

Whereas the low priced option is designed to get you the biggest captive audience possible. Often then you sell your highest priced offers to that audience, since selling from the stage can be the most receptive place to make those offers.

This can lead to what’s known as the stampede effect, where you make an offer from the stage (especially if it’s time or quantity limited), and people see audience members going up to take the offer, so the fear of missing out kicks in and other people rush up too. Such offers at seminars have been known to bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars over a weekend.

By thinking strategically, you can leverage your book and increase your profits through more than publishing.

You will learn how to start an eBook business today and start making an income by following these simple tips.

When starting an eBook business look for your passions, interests and hobbies. Also look at your skills and experiences as these are great places to start.

Creating and selling eBooks is a great business model today. But why? Simply because, anyone can get started for free and anyone can have a best selling eBook. So how can this be beneficial to you?

If you have one or several popular eBooks you will gain the following:

 > FREE TARGETED TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEBSITE OR BLOG
> EARN MONEY AND EVEN A GOOD INCOME FROM SELLING THEM
> GAIN VALUABLE EXPOSURE AS AN EXPERT IN THIS AREA
> CREATE A FOLLOWING IN YOUR NICHE TO HELP YOU EXPAND
> ADD AFFILIATE LINKS IN YOUR BOOKS TO SELL OTHER THINGS

There are various ways that starting an eBook business can benefit you today. I say today because, we are living in a virtual era and people want convenience. So, when someone can order your book and be reading it in minutes that's powerful.

Also, as you are starting out you can charge a lot less than the big players so, you can start to get a few sales rolling in and as time goes by you can gradually increase your costs if you wish to. And that's the beauty of this is that you are boss.

Now, you do not have to use Amazon either. You can use a variety of platforms to expose your works, and this is up to you and what fits for you. Plus you can create an e-book to give away to your list if you have one to create more opt ins to your primary business if you have one. So it's a win win.

People today are actually running eBook businesses very successfully and the reason that they are able to is because of the following …

 1) THEY KNOW THEIR CORE AUDIENCE
2) THEY DOMINATE THEIR CORE AUDIENCE
3) THEY APPEAL GREATLY TO THEIR CORE AUDIENCE
4) THEY HAVE GREAT BOOK COVERS THAT ALSO APPEAL
5) THEY HAVE DONE THEIR DUE RESEARCH WITH THEIR COMPETITION

So, what I suggest you do after you have read this is, go to Google and Amazon and start searching for ideas. Look at the books that are already out there and get a feel for what the best sellers are.

 Ask yourself

 > WHY ARE THESE BEST SELLERS
> WHAT DO THESE BOOKS OFFER IN TERMS OF VALUE AND FRESHNESS
> WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THEM AND HOW DO THEY APPEAL

Then start to take notes on these areas and also get clear on your core areas. As I mentioned, you need to know the exact area that you are going into.

Why not start an Amazon account if you like the idea of kindle publishing and start looking at reviews by buyers. Look at what they thought about the best selling books in the areas that you want to go into. Remember that it is the customers that matter. So find out what they wanted. Now I will share a great tip on how to start an eBook business today and get into profit.

HOT TIP: You do not have to be the best writer on Earth to get a best seller. Many best sellers are just books that appeal and the creator knew how to access that audience perfectly.

 Stuck with ideas?

If you can not think of your passions or think of areas that you want to get into, then consider looking at hot topics.

It’s everyone’s dream, having your own top selling book paving the way to great publicity, prestige, wealth and fame giving you the freedom to finally break free of the daily grind.

When many of us consider how to learn to write a book we think back to studying great fiction writers in school where we are taught the basics of grammar and the English language. Yes, you have to know the basics of how to write, but to write an ebook or best-selling book, it has little to do with writing ability and everything to do with understanding your readers and what they want.

Of course this is good news if you don’t fancy yourself a literary type, where the words just don’t seem to come when you sit down to write and where adhering to the main rules of grammar and spelling are more painful than placing your hand on a hot element.

Your question of how to learn to write a book can be answered in 3 simple steps.

1. Mastering idea generation and market research. You will notice that this step has absolutely nothing to do with writing, but instead stresses the importance of knowing how to evaluate demand, uncover opportunities to provide answers to questions and understand the unerlying motivation behind common questions your readers will have.

2. Organize and Outline. It’s a little known fact that non-fiction, informational books are most valuable when organized into a logical sequence of information corresponding to high demand customer questions. Especially important to mastering the organization of any ebook, book or informational product is to reverse engineer the questions that your reader will need to have answered to get from their current situation to where they want to be.

If you ask how to learn to write a book, learning how to outline your book, ebook, course or information product is the one single key to earning a fortune. Not only will it make writing your products much faster, it will open up opportunities for inexpensive ghostwriting for some of all of your books freeing your time to enjoy life.

3. Making Everything Old Unique Again. There is very little new information that exists out there, yet every month their are new best-selling books on topics where many books have been written before. Is there repetition – absolutely. Many of my clients that ask me how to learn to write a book feel they must be 100% unique in the information they provide, yet again and again top selling books contain information that largely overlaps what is already available – so why do they sell?

You may not believe me when I say this, but it is absolutely true, you only need to have one unique aspect about your product for it to become a best-seller. It is possible, and has been done many times, that all of the content overlaps with what is already out there, but is simply presented in a different way – back to the organization topic we discussed earlier.

For example, you could take the topic of traveling on a low budget, research information already available, then re-package the knowledge into your own formula – even add one or two unique experiences from your own travels and there you have it, a completely original work.

To realize our dream of becoming a best-selling author we have to know how to learn to write a book, surprisingly it has more to do with reading your market, organizing and re-packaging information in a way that is perceived as unique. With this formula, you too can realize your dreams of writing a top-selling book.

How do I sell my home?

If its a high crime area where I own,

How can I overcome?

The high crime neighborhood I’m from

And sell the house that I’ve known.

There are many books, articles and brochures available showing people how to sell their homes. They offer tips, tricks and techniques to get the most for their homes.

But one assumption flows through all these books (many best-sellers) and articles. What do most of them assume? I am glad you asked.

They all assume you live in an average neighborhood. You know the Leave it to Beaver, Mayberry or George Jefferson type neighborhoods. Have you noticed that? Or at best they assume you live in the average middle- class neighborhood.

But what if you don’t fit any of those molds. In fact what if you live in a high crime neighborhood. What do you do? I sold my first two homes in high crime neighborhoods, so I can speak from experience.

There’s not many real estate sales books that tell you how to sell your home in a high crime neighborhood. In fact, selling a home in a high crime neighborhood is the most challenging for obvious reasons.

No one chooses to live in a high crime neighborhood, much less buy in a high crime neighborhood.

But if someone did buy a home in a high crime neighborhood it’s usually for the following reasons.

1. It’s all the person can afford.

2. It’s close to job, family or other social reason.

3. It’s for investment purposes. A way to start as a landlord.

4. It’s a way to expand one’s real estate portfolio.

So we’ll touch on each of the 4 reasons and I’ll show you how to make your home more attractive to the 4 types of people that is the most likely to buy your home.

I. It’s All The Person Can Afford

This is the person or couple who is just starting out; they’re tired of renting an apartment. But they can’t afford a home in a better neighborhood.

You can appeal to this person by pricing your home or structuring your offer to appeal to this first time buyer.

Adding or having certain amenities first time buyers like newer appliances, flooring and cabinets can help to sell your home in a high crime neighborhood. And of course good fencing and lighting. Your house should look and feel safe.

II. It’s Close to Job, family or Other Social Reason.

With gas prices and travel expenses rising everyday, more people are wearing down having to commute 2 hours a day.

Fortunately if you live in an urban area you’re most likely already close to where these people work, commute and even go for entertainment. So, this is a case where location will attract this buyer.

III. It’s for Investment Purposes. A Way to Start as a Landlord.

Your home attracts this buyer as a starter investment. A way to enter the real estate investment game. They usually don’t have enough money, credit or experience to buy in a more expensive neighborhood.

So, your home would be a perfect choice for them to start and get their feet wet. You’ll want to make your home attractive to this buyer by making your offer low enough to attract them.

They’ll have to see the financial benefit to on paper. Especially if you choose not to fix the property up or if you’re in a hurry to sell.

IV. It’s a Way to Expand One’s Real Estate Portfolio.

I call these the seasoned investors. They always have an eye out for a good deal. Neighborhoods don’t usually scare them. What scares them? Overpriced properties they can’t make a profit from.

So, if you want to attract them you have to sharpen your pencil and make them an offer they can’t refuse.

Your Secret Weapon

Now that we’ve discussed the buyers you’ll want to attract, I’ll now discuss the secret weapon you must have in your corner. That secret weapon is you agent.

But wait! I don’t mean any agent. I mean a top gun agent for your neighborhood. How do you know he or she is a top gun agent?

Easy, but you’ll have to do a little homework. You simply look, ask and check.

1. Look

Look at the real estate signs within a 3-mile radius of your home. Each sign usually has the company and the agents name, make a note of whose name keeps turning up.

2. Ask

Ask for referrals from people you know have sold their home with that agent (Note: All top gun agents have referrals).

3. Check …

Check if your top gun agent is equipped to sell your home? Which means does he have the attitude, motivation and belief he can sell it? Does he or she give you the confidence he or she can sell it?

Conclusion

Now take all these tips and add your own motivation and work with your top gun agent. You’ll have a much better chance of selling your home in a high crime neighborhood. Your agent should keep you informed of market conditions, interest rates and buyer response.

The key is to make your home attractive to as many of the 4 buyers contained in this message as possible. You’ll discover your home will sell faster than you think by following these simple tips.

How I define my top 10 will definitely differ from others’. When I try to recollect the best books I’ve ever read, I have this criterion. How much did that book force me to finish in one go? Whether I was able to finish it in a single go or not due to other compelling reasons. Secondly, how much was I able to connect earlier chapters while reading later chapters. At times it happens you are at the end of the book but are not able to connect well with the story and flow. Third and most important point is how much did it fade away from my memory over a period of time. There are so many books that are as fresh in my mind as at the time of reading them. And there are books that you forget about within a week of finishing them.

This criterion of creating the top 10 best books would vary from each reader to reader. In fact, for me, it is always an evolving list. That means, it is always under formation and development. So I call it an inchoate list. These are not in any order. But all of these 10 books are evergreen and favorite.

The first book that comes to my mind is Fish. Even reading it during my college days, it still keeps knocking my mind and conscious from time to time. This is, in fact, a thin book but a lot of value inside.

The second book is Goal. Both these books are powerful transformers. They have the power to transform the lives of any person.

Next is The Prophet. In fact, this book I can read any number of times. Every time I read it, it gives me a different meaning of life.

This book is by a very young author. The book has a strong message that comes in its purest form. That is why I have not been able to forget its story despite reading it a long time back. I am talking about The Helpline.

My next favorite book is Slow by Digonta Bordoloi. There is a high level of depth in this book. We are right now in the middle of my list.

The sixth book that I would like to mention is Sudhi Kannan. This book has a simple story. But the story has all the elements of adventure, hope, drama, and action.

Living with Merlin is a story of deep pain that comes with a sweet fragrance.

The Tallion Tale is an interesting spy story having a great message.

Borderline is a book that probably everyone needs to read. It is about the psychological disorder.

The last book on my list is A Cupful of Aha!

That completes my top 10 list. The best books I’ve ever read. But that doesn’t mean these are the bestselling. In fact, I plan to write my next post on the Top 100.

These days, rather than go to paper and ink, everyone from corporate presentation givers to best selling novelists is taking the electronic path to publication. E-books have afforded so much flexibility to the publishing process that they have practically unlimited applications and uses, and it seems that they are just getting started in terms of their power to promote writers of all kinds and every conceivable genre.

Just 10 years ago, for example, before e-books really hit their stride, the only real option for a writer or author was to go to a printer or publisher and endure the long and arduous ordeal of going from a rough manuscript to a paper and ink publication. That meant that those who needed a short report for the academic world had to go to a print shop with the entire report in a special printable format and then pay for it to be converted into a bound report. If you needed a booklet to hand out at the office of a non-profit association the process was the same, and if your goal was to put together a corporate annual report, departmental report, or a technical manual or policy handbook, you still had to go through the same basic steps that it took to publish a novel.

It cost a tremendous amount of money and more importantly, it caused a huge lag time in production. By the time your report was published, the information in it might have become outdated and obsolete. The policies may have changed, or the academic breakthrough you wanted to present to the university community might have been published elsewhere by someone with a more efficient printing press.

Then there were the practical restrictions of conventional printing, such as minimum and maximum page counts, the issue of paper thickness and quality, and the choice of ink or color separations. There were important but sometimes difficult decisions to make regarding bindings and covers, and if the spine of a smaller book was not at least a quarter of an inch think it could be rejected by stores because there wasn’t enough room to display the title on the spine.

All that changed thanks to the creation of e-books, which now represent the new frontier in terms of publishing and printing of books – whether they are short pamphlets and reports or large, full-sized and full-color books. Today it is possible to use online templates and virtual bindings – plus upload amazingly vibrant full-color photos – and produce a book in no time at all. As choices are made it is possible to see realistic previews of the finished e-book, and none of these valuable steps in the process have to add extraordinary costs to the book as they used to do before e-book technology came along.

You can use an e-book to create a report and send it across your company’s department or to multi-national corporate departments spread across the globe. You can build an electronic scrapbook or family history book for limited distribution to your family members, or go online with a high school yearbook that can be read by classmates anywhere in the world. Put your new novel out to the public through book promotion sites and then use the publicity to launch international sales through a global bookstore like Amazon. Or publish your book the old-fashioned way and then display and promote it in sections, excerpts, or an alternative electronic format by converting all or part of it into an e-book. The possibilities are endless, and the format for e-books is entirely flexible.

E-books have replaced traditional books that run the whole gamut and range from small poetry chapbooks to full-fledged novels and comprehensive technical manuals. If you can imagine it in print – from a 5,000 word speech you want to share through an e-book to a series of how-to e-books that teach someone how to build a house or launch a business – you can accomplish your goals in record time through the rapidly expanding global e-book industry.

By now, most authors know what virtual book tours are or at least have heard of them. They’re that wonderful marketing tool that should be a must have in every new book’s campaign. With each new book I write, I’m making a game plan before the book is even published and a virtual book tour is the first promotional venue on that list.

While most of us know what they are, there are still a few new authors who might have heard of them but have no idea what they involve. I give you my top 10 things you need to know about virtual book tours so that you will know what to expect.

Virtual book tours are the BEST way to get the MOST online exposure for your book. Not only are you presenting your book and yourself to thousands of people, all of your interviews, guest posts and reviews are archived which means months down the road, you’re still selling your book because of that one tour.

Virtual book tours ARE a lot of work. Not only are you searching for the perfect blogs to host you, you are acting as the middle man between you and the blogger unless you are using a paid service such as Pump Up Your Book who will do all the work for you. Even if you do sign up with Pump Up Your Book, there is still lots of work to do completing assignments – filling out interviews and writing guest posts unless you choose an all review tour. Even though it requires a little bit of your time to fill out interviews and write guest posts, it’s well worth it.

You will learn more about your book than you ever did. I had an author tell me that through the interviews and guest posts she had to complete, she never learned so much about her book which caught her off guard. Now when she is interviewed on radio shows and makes television appearances, she is better prepared.

Virtual book tours will build up your author platform. No matter if you’re a fiction author or a nonfiction author, virtual book tours will build up your author platform using your key search words.

Your reviews are guaranteed. Offline publicists while they mean well do it all wrong. They query a book blogger, make arrangements to send the book, then that’s where it stops. The review is not a guaranteed thing. The reviewer can post the review anytime they see fit. With virtual book tours, your review is guaranteed on a certain date unless the reviewer jumps ship which rarely happens. I had an author tell me she signed up with an offline publicist who sent out many books and only one or two reviewers actually came through for them. That was money loss for the author. Books don’t come cheap these days so coming up with a date you and the reviewer can agree upon guarantees that review will be a given thing.

Many reviewers now take ebooks which save you money. Thank goodness someone was smart enough to invent a device that automatically loads a book in a few seconds (no waiting to go to the book store anymore my friend) and makes it fun to read. When Amazon lowered their price of the Kindle, sales soared and book lovers started talking about getting one. What that means is that it opened up a wonderful way to get these books to the book reviewers quickly and less expensively. Have you noticed how much books are and how much it takes to ship them? Not saying all reviewers will take ebooks, but as time goes on, most will have an e-reader and, as a matter of fact, will prefer an ebook.

More website hits, more blog hits, more Twitter hits and more Facebook Fan Page hits. All authors should have a website or blog and accounts at Twitter and Facebook. No matter if you think they’re all a waste of time. A virtual book tour will definitely give you more hits at all places as long as your links are in your bio.

Going on a virtual book tour raises your Alexa rankings. What is Alexa? Alexa measures how well you are doing in the search engines. By going on a virtual book tour, and including interviews and guest posts during that tour, your website and blog links are included in every bio (or should be!). Those are incoming links which Alexa uses to measure your ranking. The more your website or blog link shows up on other sites, the more valuable your site is to them and thus, your rankings soar.

You will learn how to sell your book through media exposure. Not all authors take advantage of their interviews and guest posts by gearing them toward their audience, thus luring them to their book and/or website/blog. I’ve had many authors on tour and the ones who really take the time to make their interviews and guest posts effective selling tools are the ones who profit the most. The key thing here is to make your audience curious. One liners in the case of interviews may not cut it. Of course there are only so many ways you can answer “What’s your book about?” but take your time and get your audience’s curiosity peaked so that they do make your way over to your website or your book’s buying link.

Virtual book tours teach you how to connect well with others. There is no better way to learn how to network. All these wonderful book bloggers who agree to host you are your new friends in your extended network and they will be there for you the next time you have a book to promote (unless they completely hated it of course). You’ll also learn how to use the social networks effectively as you study how to get people over to your stops by persuasive wording. Remember to talk to your audience, not at them.

There you have it. 10 reasons I feel you need to know about virtual book tours in a nutshell. If you have a tour coordinator as opposed to setting one up yourself, she will walk you through it so that it will be a fun experience for all. Your book will thank you for it.

1. They underestimate the planning and effort needed to engage with the marketplace in order to promote their work. Until you are ready to take the reins into your own hands to promote your book, you are still a writer. Publishers today do very little to promote your work. If you want to be an author, you need a robust marketing plan that is planned out at least six months before your publishing date and it’s essential to also have a post-publishing plan as well.

2. They get caught up with sales. This is a biggie – after all there’s lots of pressure made upon authors to constantly promote their books! Yet, a lot of writers want a “payback” in the form of sales. I get that sales are important, but you know what will bring those sales? Readers. If you forgo that connection, then you’ve missed building a platform that sells. Word-of-mouth marketing is the best kind of selling there is. Every time you find yourself looking at sales, ask yourself if you’ve done all that you can to fully connect with readers. Think of workshops, book talks, speaking engagements, webinars, teleseminars. The opportunities are endless!

3. They don’t have a long term marketing strategy. You aren’t in the business just to publish your first and only book, right? A long term marketing strategy requires investing in the publishing and marketing for your first book as well as leaving aside time to write additional books. Becoming an author requires long term thinking. What do you want your career to look like in 5-10-15 years? Do you want to still see yourself promoting over your first book?

4. They depend on the publisher to market and promote their books. Unfortunately, publishers don’t do very much for their authors these days. Even the bestselling New York Times authors are self-publishing their books to regain more control of the sales and marketing. Many authors like myself

5. They become distracted by the success of other authors. In the process of learning how to promote themselves, they inevitably compare themselves to the success of other authors, (this is very easy to do, I know!) which in turns, lowers one’s self-esteem. They think: “I’m never going to become like that author who does such and such.” So here’s a better way to go about it: If you’re an aspiring author, look at what these authors are doing right, and then aim for that. Make that your quarterly goal. If you’re an aspiring first time author, stay focused on your writing goals.

As you can see, there’s a lot of footwork involved in transitioning from the writer’s life to claiming authorship. It’s one of the hardest things to do in making this decision.

One of the most popular books that come out every year is the Guinness book of records. This is now more commonly known as the Guinness world records. This popular book chronicles things such as the best and worst or the longest and shortest or many other recordable facts from throughout the world.

This book is accredited to the Irish twins Ross and Norris McWhirter who actually published the first Guinness book of records in Britain as far back as 1955. What a lot of people do not actually realize though is that the book is commissioned by a famous brewery in Ireland namely the Guinness brewery.

Guinness came up with the idea of making the book in order to further promote their product and bring more revenue into their company. The book initially was just a way of letting people know the answers too many of the bar bets that were being run at the time.

It is rumored that the original idea came in 1951 when a certain Sir Hugh Beaver, who was at the time a managing director of the Guinness Empire was participating in a shooting party. He somehow got into an exchange of words with another person about Europe’s fastest bird. They argued about whether it was the Koshin Golden Plover or the Grouse.

Whilst he was trying to find the answer from his reference books in his Castlebridge House library, he suddenly realized that the books were a little vague with the answer.

Then a thought struck his mind that perhaps a book like this could in fact be quite interesting. This was the start of the Guinness book of records.

This annual book has sold millions of copies since it was first published in 1955. Funnily enough it now holds a record itself as the most popular and best selling of all the copyrighted serial books in the world.

One unenviable record that this book holds is that it is book most likely to be stolen from public libraries in the United States.

With the convenience of shopping from one’s couch or office, why would anyone take time to go to a traditional bookstore? Actually, there are many reasons.

Readers of all ages love the experience of walking into a physical bookstore, grabbing a cup of coffee to sit down and read a few favorites before making a buying decision.

However, massive bookstores are not always the stores of choices for today’s book buyer. One reason is the closure of chains like Borders. Secondly, many prefer to shop at independent stores.

Great opportunity

In the era of online buying and the e-book, new technologies are offering independent bookstores a lifeline. Without the constraints of the big chains and big box stores, the independents can create a much more memorable experience for book buyers.

Whether it be a book signing for a local author, regular events to increase interests of young readers, small workshops, or fundraisers for local charities, independent bookstores are in a great position to create an experience for communities of all sizes.

According to Christian Science Monitor, “Eight years ago, independent bookstores were supposed to be ancient history, thanks to a lethal triple whammy: competition from large brick-and-mortar chains like Barnes & Noble and Borders, surging e-book sales, and the growth of the indomitable book behemoth, Amazon.”

Shocking But True

What surprised many avid readers was the closure of mammoth stores like Borders while we saw an increase of independent stores.

Not only was there an increase in the number of stores, there was also an increase in sales and profits of the independents.

Best of all, many independent owners became increasingly willing to work with self-published authors by creating an environment of support for their works.

The resurgence of independent bookstore goes hand-in-hand with the “buy local” movement. Book buyers are taking control of where they buy books by choosing to spend locally. Money talks!

What Authors Need to Know About Indie Stores

Many self-published, and high-bred published authors would love to sell in bookstores, but have no idea how to get into the stores.

First, take time to learn as much as you can about the challenges and opportunities for indie owners. Next, map out a plan to get into the indie stores. Third, realize the more visible you are to indie owners, the better. The visibility needs to be in person, on social media and through content marketing.

Authors are considered influencers. As an influencer, visibility gives you more leverage.

With all that’s available online, there is no excuse for an author to not have a strong presence.

Get to Know Your Local Indie

It’s often been said, “It’s not what you know. It’s who you know.” This is certainly true for indie bookstore owners. You have a better chance of getting in a local store if you are a regular customer. After all, if the owner knows you are loyal to indie stores, there’s a much better chance of securing their support for your book sales.

Help with Promotions

One of the best ways to win the full support of a store owner is to participate in promotions. After all, one of the things the owner wants is foot traffic. If you are instrumental in helping to get people through the door, you are creating more revenue for the store owner.

Ask for Introductions

Without a doubt, the store owner knows store owners in other markets. The best time to ask for introductions is after a successful book signing. Be sure to take full advantage of riding the wave.

Get Your Books in Indie Stores

There are lots of ways to sell books. With all that’s available online, some authors think this is the only way. Yet, other authors are doing amazingly well with their books in bookstores.

Which is for you?

There are always a few very nice, but literally misguided souls in my telephone sales workshops, cold calling seminars, prospecting programs, and telemarketing training sessions.

They preface their questions with these words: “I heard somewhere that you should ALWAYS do such and such. What is your take on that?”

I have to resist flatly saying, “Never, ever do that!”

Here are 5 of the worst tips that these folks have heard, ideas that you should trash right away because they’ll only keep you from reaching your goals.

(1) “Never cold call.” This phrase is used to sell various things, including sales coaching services. My take: Always cold call! There’s gold in cold calling and that’s why it’s also called “prospecting.”

(2) “Don’t ask someone ‘How are you?’ after announcing who you are.” Leave this phrase, or something similar out, and you’ll sound like a recording and get shut down.

(3) “Ask people early on: ‘Do you have a minute to talk?'” Sometimes referred to as permission selling, it weakly gives control to the listener while asking him to buy a pig in a poke. If he says yes, he could be victimizing himself with a talk-a-thon, so reflexively, out of self-protection, he’ll say no. Don’t ever ask if you can sell something. Just do it!

(4) Don’t manage objections; upon first hearing one. Instead, say: “Thank you very much!” and go on to the next person, who may not object. I recommend using transition phrases to gently but firmly take the call to the next step, without hassles.

(5) “Always ASK your way to a sale instead of TELLING your way.” In theory, this ostensibly consultative approach is a winner, a soft-sell, but in the real world we need to be prepared to close and to close again through tie-downs, okay?

The worst tips are usually offered by cowards that really hate selling and aren’t very good at it. They appeal to your weakness.

Don’t buy any suggestion that promotes avoidance and indirectness instead of meeting the challenges of selling head-on.

Electronic book readers are now in-demand among many individuals from various classes. A remarkable innovation in the world of reading occurred after Amazon released the Kindle. Since then, everything keeps getting better. This time, another version is designed to make things perfect. Check out the latest Kindle DX Review online and find out what this device has for everyone.

This product is Amazon’s 3rd version of eBook reader, following the initial Kindle and the Kindle 2. It is set to solve the real problems of the first generation. Design-wise, it has a much larger screen at 10 inches. Hence, it’s better suited to handle the contents which may look shabby on the smaller screen. As a standard, it has a physical dimension of 7.2 x 0.4 x 10.4 inches; it weighs 1.1 pounds.

Some of its smart features include the 5-way controller, built-in PDF reader, and auto-rotating screen. It also offers read-to-me, built-in dictionary, and the text-to-speech capability. This product is also designed with an inclinometer which makes it easy for the users to flip it sideways or even upside down. When you purchase this item, you’ll also take home with you the power adapter, USB 2.0 cable, and battery.

Through its 9.7 E-Ink display type, all the images on its screen are clear and crisp. Its display resolution is at 1200 x 824 which is far better than the others of its kind. It also comes with built-in speakers and it supports MP3 audio format. With regard to the text formats, it’s guaranteed to read DOC, PDF, RTF, TXT, HTML, and PRC. For the still image formats, it supports BMP, GIF, PNG, and JPEG.

This device is also preloaded with wireless connectivity through 3G wireless network. That means that downloading all your favourite books, magazines, and newspapers can now be done anytime, anywhere. Yes, searching for a hotspot to connect to is absolutely unnecessary already. Plus take note, all those best-selling books and magazines are available for a very affordable price only.

Indeed, various brands of Portable Reader are now available in the market. All of them offer different features, functionalities, and costs. As for the DX, it has a QWERTY keyboard, and several interfaces such as hi-speed USB, headphones, and mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm. In addition, its battery life is proven to survive for up to 4 hours of straight use without recharging in between. Just like the other versions, it also has 1 year warranty service and support.

How would you like to have the ability to generate cash swiftly in your life, nearly on a whim? Robert G. Allen and Mark Victor Hansen in their latest book explain the secrets in quickly generating abundance wealth in concise terms and have included a 90 day millionaire’s challenge. This book is written in the same left-brain, right-brain style as their earlier book, The One Minute Millionaire, and continues the fictional story of Michelle from their earlier book.

Both are extremely well know authors. Two earlier books from Robert Allen are Multiple Streams of Income and Multiple Streams of Internet Income which cover both the real estate and online marketplaces. His first book, Nothing Down Real Estate was his biggest seller and started many on the path to real estate riches. Of course, Mark Victor Hansen is well know for the “Chicken Soup” book series, including the best selling non-fiction book of all time, Chicken Soup for the Soul.

As an aside, I have followed Robert Allen for several years now, as a fellow associate in a leading network marketing company, USANA Health Sciences. His story of how he got involved in network marketing, reluctantly, via his wife’s persistence is compelling, as is his personal story, which I’ve mostly learned through my personal association with him. Having survived a serious car accident and the loss of his house and fortune in a California mudslide, he attributes his remarkable good fortune in both health and abundance wealth situation to his involvement with network marketing, or multi-level marketing (MLM). He often states emphatically that network marketing is the most lucrative venture he has ever participated in, including all the royalties from his publishing. His earlier books have also highlighted the importance of MLM and network marketing for him personally.

Cash in a Flash is a book with a very important, and seemingly impossible goal. As in their previous book, they have followed their own advice in creating an “over the top” mental picture. In the One Minute Millionaire, for instance, they created a wildly improbable newspaper article about the release of a blockbuster movie based on the book. The headline created was:

“The One Minute Millionaire Makes Movie History – #1 Movie in America Completely Sold Out Thirty Days BEFORE it Opens.”

After eight years of shopping the movie idea to Hollywood studios, they have finally secured a major movie deal with an award-winning production house. In advertising their current book, they “‘see’ themselves on the cover of Time magazine for having helped get America out of the most crippling ‘repression’ since the Depression of 1929.” After personally “devouring” this book, I can see the rationale for this expectation. The ONLY issue will be getting these concepts widely circulated enough and read by enough people to make this a reality. Their concepts and plans are certainly well laid and proven to be successful.

The book’s success formula is: Success = a focused mind + a determined heart + a focused, determined team.

In order to achieve abundance wealth for yourself in the millionare challenge, you are instructed to come up with a plan based on products, services, and/or information given your own personal knowledge, passions, skills, desires, talents, connections, and prior successes. The object is within 90 days to create a significant income “chunk,” e.g. $100,000. Given existing talents, this should be low-hanging fruit. The strategy isn’t about learning new skills, which could take longer than your 90-day challenge “window.” I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to get started! Wax on, wax off.

This is certainly a must read for anyone whether disheartened with their current position and achievements in life or already wildly flourishing. And the more that read this advice, the better chance to literally turn the American economy around, which is their “real” goal.

Last week I received an email from someone who had read an article of mine. She writes poetry and her goal is to be a published author. In preparation for the meeting, I printed out an article from the Internet and compiled this list. Our meeting went well and she identified the tips she was going to work on first.

1. Write ezine articles. This is one of the best ways to get published and garner publicty. Authors write the articles for free and anyone may publish them for free (electronic and print) as long as they follow the publishing guidelines.

2. Write for online support groups. Many groups and foundations offer reliable support. Find one that matches your interests and write for it. You may choose to write for several groups.

3. Submit work to magazines. Many journals and magazines do not pay for submissions and your “pay” is the publicity you receve. This writing helps you garner name recognition and often leads to additional work.

4. Write for your religious community newsletter. This will help you to sharpen your skills and garner more name recognition. If you are adventurous, you may offer to edit the newsletter.

5. Join a writing group. Learn about the group before you join. Log onto the website and talk with some of the members. Make sure your writing is a match for the group.

6. Join a specialized group. Specialized groups understand your work, provide customized tips, resources, and conferences. Think of the dues as an investment in yourself.

7. Invest in writing resources. I have found the “Associated Press Style Book and Libel Manuel” to be extremely helpful. “Writer’s Digest” books have helped me as well. Over the years, I have put together a small library of writing resources and use them all the time.

8. Learn how to write a query letter. Many books offer tips on this skill. Good query letters take lots of time and practice. Personally, I do not think a query letter should be longer than one page.

9. Learn how to write a book proposal. This skill also takes time and practice. Your proposal should be concise, neat, and meet the submission guidelines.

10. Beef up your resume. If you have not written a resume before, find out how to do it. Stick to the facts and leave out the hype. Revise your resume regularly to see the progress you have made.

11. Learn about potential publishers. Before you send anything to a potential publisher, learn about the books they publish, best sellers, and any awards they have received. Keep a file folder on all of your submissions, when you made them, and the responses you received.

12. Challenge yourself. Keep a running list of article and book ideas. Pick a promising idea and start working on it.

Breaking into the publishing business is not easy, especially in this economy. A logical, organized approach may tilt the publishing odds in your favor.

Are you an assistant-to-authors or a do-it-yourself author? Do you include selling books to business organizations in your marketing program? You should.

By getting outside of the bookstore channel, you will have the potential of selling not just one book at a time but 1000s of books at a time. You’ll want to take advantage of these powerful strategies if you are…

An assistant-to-authors, regardless of your title: Virtual Assistant, Virtual Authors Assistant, Book Coach, Book Shepherd, Online Business Manager, Author’s Assistant

A published author who desires to help more people through higher book sales

A published coach, consultant, speaker or trainer who wants to catapult your reputation and open opportunities to sell other products and services

A published author who wants to make serious money by selling books by the 1000s at a time

A published author with disappointing book sales who wants to recover your financial investment in your book

A self-published author who wants to leverage better sales into acquiring additional sales channels or a publishing house

A published author who is ready to update an existing book but needs to sell the remaining inventory of the current version to help finance the update

An aspiring author who is looking for direction about what kind of book will be attractive in the marketplace

An aspiring author who knows you will be much more successful if you plan ahead about how and to whom you will market the book before and during the creation of it

Why Authors Get Frustrated with Book Sales: The Bookstore Trap – Boxes of Books with Nowhere to Go

If the author is like most, the process of writing and getting the book published was a painful experience, whether it was self-published, the author was able to get a traditional publisher or opted for a print-on-demand publisher. It took far longer and far more effort than was ever imagined it would.

Next the author may have experienced the “post-partum blues,” the separation anxiety that comes with the book finally being “delivered,” a vague empty feeling.

After the author got his or her life back to some semblance of normalcy, the day came when they fully confronted a realization. The books aren’t selling in any significant numbers. The author has boxes of books sitting in the garage or basement, the office, a warehouse somewhere. Sure, a few books have been sold at events, or a dozen here and there at book signings and such. But at that pace, the author in the storage business more than she is in the practice-building business!

The author begins musing, “What is the point of creating a book to help people and to promote yourself if nobody ever sees it? What’s the point of taking time away from my clients or other work to do book signings, only to sell a mere dozen or so books per event?”

Since the books aren’t going to sell themselves, the author may have made some efforts to figure out the book marketing and distribution business to try to break into bookstores, only to find it all archaic, complex and frustrating. She may even have gotten into a bookstore or two. But the books didn’t move, because nobody knows the books are there.

“I don’t have time for this!” the author probably exclaimed at some point. “This is not how I want to spend my life!”

But the reality is, if book sales are to be, it’s up to the author.

Welcome to the Bookstore Trap.

You’re not alone. The vast majority of authors have a disappointing publishing experience. At The Book Standard Summit 2005, Nielsen Bookscan reported that 93% of the books sold at retail in 2004 sold less than 1000 copies!

Self-publishers don’t do as well. Overall, the average self-published book sells around 250 copies! (Granted, it allowed them to get their book published when it probably wouldn’t have been published otherwise. )

The problem is that most authors and independent publishers focus almost exclusively on trying to get their books into bookstores. Even if you’re initially successful in passing muster, if your marketing efforts don’t drive people to the bookstore to buy your book in significant numbers within the first 30 days or so, the books are going to be returned. Bookstores return some 60% of all books they order!!!

But There is Good News

Here’s the fact that I’m asking you to focus on to break out of the less-than-1000-copies bookstore sales trap: According to a Feb 2005 report from the Association of American Publishers, of the $23.7 billion of books sold in 2004, only 45% were sold through bookstores, the most competitive and challenging-to-penetrate channel for selling books. That means that non-bookstore outlets account for more book sales than bookstores!!!

So, if you learn how NOT to be dependent on bookstores for sales, you’re tapping into the majority of the book market (55%)!!!

So, What’s the Answer?

One of the most powerful strategies for tapping into the non-bookstore market is selling large quantities of books to organizations for use as incentives, the billion-dollar book portion of the $46 billion business gifts and incentives market.

The what? The incentives marketplace is that part of non-bookstore sales comprised of organizations – corporations, associations, charities, etc. – that buy books to use as a incentive (gift ) for customers and prospects or as an incentive to employees or channel partners. (Some people use the term “premiums” to differentiate the merchandise portion of incentives. That is, to distinguish merchandise from cash, travel, etc.) When these organizations buy a book, they order it by the 1000’s, the 10’s of thousands, even the 100’s of thousands.

A study conducted by the Incentive Marketing Association (IncentiveMarketing.org) among a broad spectrum of companies revealed that 82% of them used merchandise or travel as incentives. Even more significant, they reported an 80% success rate in achieving their goals.

Are Your Clients’ Books or Your Book a Candidate for Incentive Sales?

If your non-fiction book provides quality how-to information, if it inspires or entertains, if it’s well designed and put-together, it’s a candidate. Any corporation, association or other non-profit which has target audiences that match those of your book, and whose management feels your book reflects positively on its brand values, are potential candidates.

How Big are Incentive Deals, Really?

As an incentive for joining their condensed book club, Reader’s Digest gave away 750,000 copies of Judith King’s Greatest Gift Guide Ever.

Grossett & Dunlap offered Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books as a self-liquidating (break-even) incentive on 20 million boxes of Post Raisin Bran cereal, resulting in the sale of over one million books!

R.J. Reynolds distributed 1.5 million copies of the Great Trails Road Atlas as an on-pack (attached to the package) incentive offer on cartons of Marlboros to promote the image of the Marlboro Man.

Are all the deals that big?

No…

U.S. West purchased 2,000 copies of Talking with Your Customers to demonstrate appreciation to their Yellow Pages advertisers

Before the publish date, Kenneth Blanchard sent copies of Who Moved My Cheese to the CEOs of corporations. The Bank of Hawaii bought 4000, Mercedes Benz 7000, and Southwest Airlines 27,000.

Judy Dugan sold 5,000 copies of her self-published book, Santa Barbara Highlights and History, to a Santa Barbara bank who gave a copy to every customer who came in to a new branch opening

The Average Size of Deals

According to MotivationShow.com, most of the sales of books as incentives start at a quantity of 5,000 books and goes up from there. That’s at least 5,000 people benefiting from having your expertise in their hands and each of them telling probably 5+ other people about it.

And if you personally made a net profit – after production and shipping costs, which the buyer covers – of $2 a book, that’s $10,000

$2 a book = $20,000

$4 a book = $40,000

And what if they wanted 30,000 copies of your book or more? Such deals are happening all year long.

So, Giving Things to Customers is Pretty Much How Organizations Use Incentives?

There’s a real “whew” list of ways. In a 2003 study by Louisiana State University and Glenrich Business Studies, 2000 randomly selected promotional product distributors ranked usage of promotional products in different types of programs as follows:

RANK USAGE CATEGORY

Business Gifts: Gifts to foster customer goodwill and retention

Employee Relations & Events: Morale and motivation, corporate/employee events, employee orientation, organizational commitment/corporate identity, corporate communication, employee training (other than safety), employee referral programs

Trade Shows: Trade-show traffic generation

Brand Awareness: Promotion of brand awareness and brand loyalty

Employee Service Awards: Anniversary recognition, service awards, etc.

Dealer/Distributor Programs: Dealer incentives, co-op programs, company stores

Public Relations: Corporate involvement with community, fundraising, sponsorship, school programs, media relations, corporate image

New Customer/Account Generation: New customer or new account generation

Internal Promotions: Sales incentive, TQM/quality programs, productivity, inventory reduction, error reduction, attendance improvement

New Product/Service Introduction: New product or service introduction

Safety Education/Incentive: Employee safety and education

Not-For-Profit Programs: Not-for-profit use for fundraising, public awareness campaigns (health, environment, public safety, etc.)

Customer Referral: Customer referral incentive programs

Marketing Research: Marketing research, survey, and focus group participation programs

So, How Big are the Benefits to the Author of Selling to This Market?

You be the judge:

It’s likely to be the best thing you’ve ever done to promote your practice and other products and services. Success provides you greater exposure, credibility, pride and self-confidence

Unlike bookstore channels, you have little or no competition! Because authors and independent publishers don’t understand this market, organizations receive very few, if any, proposals. Present yourself professionally and persuasively (with the tools I’ll give you) and you have a great chance at getting noticed and considered

Selling to the incentives market is totally compatible with any other marketing or distribution program you’re doing. And it doesn’t matter if you self-published, used a traditional publisher or a POD publisher (more below).

You can pursue the program even if your book isn’t published yet. If fact, in some cases, that may even be an advantage

By building a track record of book sales, you open the door to other opportunities – traditional publishers, literary agents, other sales channels, partners, clients. It only opens other doors for you, while closing none

It has a high Return-on-Time-Invested (ROTI). For the amount of time you would invest in, say, setting up and conducting six book signings – where you might sell a few dozen books at most -you can create multiple opportunities to sell 1000’s of books

Unlike books sold to bookstores, books sold as incentives are non-returnable. You’re not left wondering how many are going to come back, and especially in damaged condition

Selling to the incentives market is fast pay. While bookstores typically pay in 90 days or so, most incentive sales not only call for a deposit of as much as 50% – which should cover your printing costs by the way, so you have no out of pocket costs for printing – and payment of the balance within 30 days of delivery. That not only allows you to recover your investment in publishing the book, it allows you to invest in all the other things you want to do to build your practice

Once you have a sales agreement or purchase order in hand for a bulk sale, it can be bid out to an offset printer to get the cost of production way down. If you’ve self-published, that dramatically increases you profit. If you used a traditional publisher, that gets the publisher’s cost down, so it may not make you more money, but it helps seal the deal because the lower printing cost allows you to offer a more attractive discount to the buyer

While the offset printer is printing the books for your buyer, you can have him print additional copies you can use to fulfill orders from other sources. The much lower printing costs means you make more from every other book you sell to other sources

So with Many Benefits to Authors, and It Being Such a Big Market, Why Isn’t the Market Better Known to Authors and Independent Publishers?

First, it’s because there isn’t a formal, organized channel to bring buyers and sellers together. Yes, there are a few incentive trade shows where buyers and sellers link up, but few authors and independent publishers invest the time and money to set up a booth there

Second, it’s because independent publishers are primarily specialists in the traditional bookstore publishing business. It’s what they know. Few know how to target, approach or talk the language of the marketing and human resources managers who implement incentive programs in organizations

Third, although some book marketing experts talk in their books, etc. about the importance and advantages of this market for authors, it’s typically a high-level overview amidst many other topics, not a specialized and detailed how-to program

Why Do Organizations Like Using Books as Incentives?

Lots of good reasons:

Books, in general, have a much higher perceived value compared to most logo-imprinted products – things like notepads, paper weights, mouse pads, etc

Books aren’t thrown away. They have a lasting presence, which means they provide the organization that uses them visibility over a period of time – and they love that!

A book, especially a non-fiction book, allows an organization to demonstrate a desire to help the recipient because it provides useful information. That reflects positively on the organization in a world where people have become pretty cynical about for-profit companies at least

Each book is unique. Organizations like things that differentiate them from their competitors, that tie into their brand personality and values they want to convey

Books are relatively easy and cheap to ship because they’re small and lightweight. That saves the organization money over a lot of other options

Last, but not least, books are customizable. Organizations do not just look at a book in its present form, but how it might be customized to accomplish their goals. It may be a sticker on the cover, a special offer loosely inserted, or a paper band around the book with a special message. But, for an order in the 1000’s of books, it’s definitely worth it to the self-publisher or publisher to customize it to suit their needs. Especially when the customer pays for the customization!

Are Incentives Sales Beneficial Regardless of How You Managed to Get Published?

Yes, with qualifications:

If you are self-published (meaning it’s under your ISBN number), you’re in the best situation, because you’ll make more money and have maximum flexibility. You can make any kind of deal you choose to make. And the difference between your sale price and the cost of producing the book is all yours. This includes using Lightning Source, the leading, digital, print-on-demand printer

If you sell 5000 books at a discounted, bulk price of $7 each and it cost you $3 each to do a quantity, offset printing of the book (which even Lightning Source will broker for you), you make $4 on each book. That’s $20,000

Furthermore, you now have 5000 books out there building your reputation and driving customers to your practice for your other products and services

If you used a traditional publisher, you’ll make less money than a self-publisher because you’re locked into whatever royalty structure that is in your publishing agreement

At that above bulk price of $7, you’d make an average of 10% of the $7.00 or $.70 per book. You’d make $3500 on the sale of the 5000 books. The publisher would keep the bulk of the profit.

Still, $3500 from that one deal is a whole lot more than the average author makes from his or her entire sales of a book. Plus you get the exposure.

If you used a digital, print-on-demand publisher (meaning it’s under their ISBN number), it all depends on the discount and royalty arrangement that’s in your publishing agreement. You’re at a significant disadvantage because you’re locked into the publisher’s relatively high, one-off digital printing structure and a relatively small royalty or commission.

Typically, you can’t offer as attractive a bulk discount price to the buyer because most POD publishing agreements don’t anticipate bulk sales and don’t offer deep discounts for high quantity printing. But again, you’re making more money than you were, and you’re getting exposure.

Note: check with your POD publisher. Some will broker quantity printing to an offset printer for you. But find out what they charge for same and if they’ll make an exception to your royalty arrangement.

If You Employed an Outside Publisher Will He Go along with This Program?

Most publishers are absolutely giddy at the news of a quantity sale of books. In fact, want to know a secret? Independent publishers of non-fiction books are often interested in our book sales program for themselves! (You could even plant the seed.)

After all, on one knows better than they do that the average book sells only 200 – 300 copies or so. They want to recover their investment in your book and make some money.

If you publisher balks at you’re doing this program for some strange reason, have him read this page or our FAQs. See what you can negotiate. If s/he still balks for some strange reason, look for a new publisher next time around.

What Are Your Options for Marketing to the Books-as-Incentives Marketplace?

If you were published by a major publisher, their “special sales” department may take an interest in it

You can have a booth at an incentives industry trade show where buyers are looking for incentive ideas. There is The Motivation Show nationally and state-by-state shows as well.

You could advertise in incentive-buyer media

The most realistic solution for most authors is doing a direct marketing program themselves. It takes minimal skills and a modest investment of time if you have the necessary knowledge and tools

One thing is for sure. Just one incentive program sale can pay the author big financial dividends and catapult his or her career like few other avenues can.

One cannot undermine the importance of reading in a child’s education. That’s why educational books are important as they help increase a child’s vocabulary and awaken his interest to learn more. Reading is the first step and the basic foundation for a child to perform well in school. When a child develops love for reading, learning other things becomes a lot easier. It is, therefore, important for parents to get the children’s interest to read at a very young age.

In order to capture your child’s interest for educational books, develop the habit of reading aloud to them. They will find it interesting as you read to them different stories and imitate various characters. Set aside a specific time of day dedicated to reading alone. This will have the children something to look forward to every day. Once the children develop love for reading, they will also develop the initiative to read on their own as they grow old. Reading is especially good to unwind and relax that’s why many parents prefer to read bedtime stories to their children.

Another good way to get your child exposed to the wonders of educational books is to take them to libraries. This will both teach them to develop appreciation for good books and learn the responsibility of returning them properly. If they’re old enough to select their books and reading materials, you can encourage them to get their own library card so they can explore and borrow on their own. Show them the area in the library where children’s educational books are found.

One important tip to get the attention of your children is to engage them every time you read stories. When you read with feelings and emotions and, at the same time, interact with children as you tell stories, they are challenged to use their imagination and listen intently. As you read educational books, include your children as part of the characters in the story. This will thrill them so much that they will want to participate in the story-telling until they learn to tell the story on their own. There are movies that were created based on best-selling books. It would help to buy these books and watch the movie with your kids. This will help them to relate the movie to the original story in the book. This will test their memory and understanding of what they watch and read.

Children should be able to associate reading with fun; as such, you should know how to create a good environment that’s conducive to reading and learning. It’s best to set up a separate area in your house or room that’s dedicated to reading and studying. Provide the appropriate furniture such as study table, chair and book shelves for all the educational books that you will buy for your children. Do not force them to read when they’re not in a good mood as this might make them develop negative notions about reading and studying.

There’s no specific age set to introduce your child to reading; but the earlier you expose them to the beauty of books and the wonders of reading, the better it is for them.

“The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it”, quotes James Bryce. This adage is applicable for academic and hobby reading as well. The reader gains insight into diverse range of subjects and is in control of utilizing the knowledge, thus gained. The ideal ways in which mental interpretation may be presented include speech and writing. The advantage of having thoughts, knowledge and interpretability in the written form, provides scope for long term reading and one may preserve the literature for centuries.

Books that divulge details about exotic locations, travel options and most suitable methods to plan a tour are included in this specific category. Travel books offer a fascinating experience of knowing the pros, cons and the best things to expect after getting there, not to mention the typical weather, landmarks, festivals and other significant events. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to traverse the globe through books? There are different categories that cater to a wide range of travelers and they are explored as follows:

Adventure:

Books in this category, incorporate details on a wide range of adventure travel destinations. Readers may avail information on the exotic wildlife safaris of Africa and the expeditions of Antarctica. A comprehensive data on exploration of countries like Vietnam, China and Japan or the islands of Lakshadweep and the Andaman are incorporated. All this and more, are included in books that deal with adventure travel. Information on trekking, hiking, water rafting, snorkeling, shark diving and much more may be availed from this category.

Culture:

Culture is a wide subject that is seldom encompassed in a single book or volume and is best when read in categorically earmarked pages. Most travel guides that take you on a cultural expedition are magazines that deal with cultural predispositions of a defined region, in the most elaborate and enthralling manner. Cultural adventure is ideal for travelers, keen on participating in the cultural extravaganza of a chosen destination. These books deal with time and season bound events and the detailed information provided, makes it an ideal choice for travelers.

Recreational:

Recreational travel is the most popular category as it can be held any time of the year and is not limited by geographic boundaries. Each destination is blessed with its own unique culture. Travel to amusement parks and nature’s very own paradises across the world, is made easy with travel books. You may get a glimpse of Tarzan’s tree house or take a trip to the wondrous Egypt. There is a surfeit of information available on the ‘how’ and ‘where’ of tour planning and the places to avail best deals. The type of journey and the ‘must-see’ places are lucidly presented in travel books.

The most well known publication houses that deal with travel books include ‘The Lonely Planet Guides’, Michelin Guides and ‘The Moon Guides’ which are apt for an adventure loving traveler. The internet is another important source for availing information on the most visited tourist destinations. Reviews from travelers offer detailed preview on the pros and cons of the trip and help the reader plan one that is ideally suited. Books on travel may have been replaced by the electronic media which is the present trend, yet exclusive books on travel will never go out of style.

A lot of people make cookbooks for sale. Many use it for non-profits or as fundraisers for a variety of things. You can create a cookbook for a number of reasons. If you want to write a book, a cookbook is one of the easiest books to write and it is surely something that a restaurant owner might consider writing.

Did you know that cookbooks are among the highest selling books of all types? Did you also know that writing a cookbook is really easy way to have a book under your own name so that you can promote your business?

Your clientele will really love a cookbook written by you, especially if they are regulars at your restaurant and they like the food you prepare. I'm not talking about writing a 500 page book that outlines the history of French cuisine with the beautiful color photographs found in a coffee table book.

This can be a cookbook of maybe some of the most favorite dishes that you serve in your restaurant. No, I am not telling you to give away your secrets, nor am I saying you should feel as though you're giving away intellectual property. Anything that is really a secret, keep it a secret. That's not the kind of dish I'm talking about.

The reason you might want to have a cookbook is that it helps people to remember you. It creates a sense of camaraderie, helping them to feel as though they are part of the "in-crowd".

The truth of the matter is, yes, a lot of people use cookbooks and they will use the recipes and they'll make some of the same things that they can actually buy at your restaurant. Initially this might seem as though you are shooting yourself in the foot. The real truth is the average person is pretty lazy and when it comes to going out to eat, despite the current economic situation, people are still finding money to go out to eat.

 Why?

Because they like to be rented to a night out. They do not want to have to plan it. They do not want to have to shop for it. They do not want to have to prepare it. They do not want to have to cook it. They definitely do not want to serve it. And they most certainly will not want to clean it up.

The idea is by giving them the recipes, you expand on them. Give a little bit of history. Tell a little bit of a story. How did that recipe come about? What famous person came in and raved about this particular recipe? What two cooks cooked in the kitchen over who recipe was the best until they finally collaborated and realized that by taking a bit of each recipe they came up with one that was far better than either one was alone.

These are the kinds of things to put in a cookbook. People like stories. The entire world revolves around stories. We've had a tradition of oral storytelling for many years, since since the beginning of time. The average person relates very well to stories. So, by providing a story behind some of the recipes, you're going to give that sense of companionship, unification, camaraderie to your customers.

There are quite a few articles around on “The Seven Deadly Sins of Copywriting”. But if you look at them, you will see that not many of them seem to be about the REAL Seven Deadly Sins! These are Pride, Avarice, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Anger, Sloth.

Why were these particular sins chosen centuries ago as the “deadly” sins? Because they were unforgivable! They are as unforgivable in copywriting as they are in any other sphere of life. But remember this – that as long as you avoid them in your copywriting, you can actually harness their power to help you sell your products!

·	Pride. Who do you think YOU are? What makes you think the reader is interested in YOU? When I visit your site, I am interested in ME and MY needs. So nothing will put me off more quickly than you rambling on about yourself! Forget “I – I – I” in your copy and focus on “You -You -You”. You must convince your readers that you are interested in THEM and THEIR needs, if you want to keep them reading.

·	Avarice. Don’t look greedy and as if you are only out for the money (even if you are …). The first rule of copywriting is to focus on the BENEFITS to the buyer of your product or service. Your aim is to make the reader so excited about the benefits that your price will seem like a bargain.

·	Lust. Don’t appear desperate for the sale! Some of the most effective sales letters are those in which the writer seems indifferent and points out that he/she doesn’t need the paltry amount that is being asked for the product, but that YOU will be the loser if you don’t buy it.

·	Envy. Don’t try to copy other people. You may have noticed someone else who is fantastically successful and think “If I write just like that, I’ll be just as successful.” Almost certainly not true. That person will have worked hard on developing his or her individual style. You need to develop your own individual style and personality to make your mark as a copywriter. (This doesn’t mean you can’t glean ideas from other people: of course you can. Just don’t copy them!)

·	Gluttony. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Making extravagant promises in order to gain a sale, and then finding you can’t deliver, will ruin your business reputation as nothing else can.

·	Anger. A very deadly sin. DON’T badmouth competitors and DON’T use bad language. I recently received an extraordinary series of promotional e-mails from a self-styled Internet Guru (whose stock-in-trade was being rude to his readers), slamming a couple of fellow Internet marketers who he thought were competing unfairly. He used such bad language, including several 4-letter words, that I promptly removed myself from his list, as I am sure many others did.

·	Sloth. Possibly the deadliest sin of all. Few things about sales copy are more of a turn-off than careless spelling, grammar and presentation. If you are too lazy to use the spellcheck, or to proofread your work, you will appear sloppy and unprofessional to your readers. Do you think that will help you sell whatever you are selling? I don’t think so. Especially if you are trying to sell your services as a copywriter! The same thing applies if your headlines and body copy are full of cliches and stock phrases because you are too lazy to think of anything original to say!

So – you are purer than pure. Your copywriting is free from all these deadly sins. The good news for you is that the rest of society is not! So you can make the seven deadly sins WORK for you to help you sell your product!

One of the most basic lessons in copywriting is that people buy things because they are driven by desires and emotions, not by logic. So you have to write your copy to tap into these desires and emotions. But where do these desires and emotions come from? From the seven deadly sins, of course!

Why do people buy Maserati cars or Cartier watches? Why do they buy dream homes, jewelry or other luxury items? Not because they need them. Basically because of Envy and Pride! They envy those who already have them, or they want everyone else to envy THEM. One of the best selling books of all time was The Lazy Man’s Way to Riches. Why? Because it appealed to people’s Avarice and Sloth at the same time. Lust ensures that you can’t go far wrong with a dating site or products designed to help people attract the opposite sex.

And we all know about the problems Gluttony has created in our society. Obesity is a ticking health time-bomb, and there is an insatiable market for weight-loss products. But what is the most sure-fire way to sell one of these products? By convincing people that it will enable them to lose weight while still eating as much as they want!

Yes, it’s highly regrettable. But the fact is that to make your copy work, you have to appeal to people’s basic desires. So always keep those seven deadly sins in mind. Just make sure you avoid them yourself!
