Gmail is a free, advertising-supported webmail, POP3, and IMAP service provided by Google. Gmail was launched as an invitation-only beta release on April 1, 2004 and it became available to the general public on February 7, 2007, though still in beta status at that time. The service was upgraded from beta status on July 7, 2009, along with the rest of the Google Apps suite. As of November 2010, it had 193.3 million users monthly.

With an initial storage capacity offer of 1 GB per user, Gmail significantly increased the webmail standard for free storage from the 2 to 4 MB its competitors such as Hotmail offered at that time. Gmail has a search-oriented interface and a “conversation view” similar to an Internet forum. Software developers know Gmail for its pioneering use of the Ajax programming technique. Gmail runs on Google GFE/2.0 on Linux. [via wiki]

Beginners Guide to Gmail

1. The Ultimate Guide To Gmail [PDF] by Makeuseof

Email – a tool on the internet that has changed everybody’s lives. The majority of us probably have at least one email account, and some of may even have 2, 3, 4, or even more than that. People use email everyday whether it be for work, school, or our personal lives. But what email provider is best for you? Gmail seems to be the preferred choice for many.

2. Gmail for Beginners 10-Part Series by butterscotch

Get up close and personal with Gmail, Google’s free email service. In this series we’ll learn all about Gmail Chat, sending and receiving messages, adding contacts and getting the day’s news. In this tutorial series hosted by DemoGirl.com’s Molly McDonald, we start off simple before delving in to some of Gmail’s more powerful advanced features.

3. An Unofficial User’s Guide to Gmail byPCMAG

Five years in beta mode hasn’t prevented Google’s Web-based Gmail from flourishing. In fact, it’s one of the few e-mail products continuing to innovate in any way these days. Desktop clients like Outlook and Thunderbird haven’t changed much in years; Hotmail gets a new name every few months, but that’s about it. Gmail, via experiments from the Gmail Labs team, is constantly adding new features.

Plus, Gmail is simple to use. At least on the surface. However, much of Gmail’s power goes untapped. So we’ve put together this guide to highlight the features you may have missed—ones that separate Gmail from the pack.

Gmail Tips & Tricks

1. 10 Dead Simple Gmail Tips, Tricks & Shortcuts by Amy-Mae Elliott

Gmail can be tweaked almost endlessly with various Firefox and Chrome extensions, and offers some pretty nifty Labs options too. However, we’ve taken a look at some simple tips, tricks, tweaks and shortcuts you can use without going down the plugin or experimental route. These 10 features will help you get so much more out of the webmail service, from an enhanced chat experience, to smarter filters, to offline access.

Have a read through now and let us know any neat Gmail hints you’d like to share in the comments box below.

2. 15 Awesome Gmail Tips and Tricks by Ramesh Natarajan

Gmail is the best thing that happened since sliced bread. That may sound like an over statement. If you really think about it, Gmail definitely has changed the way how we manage emails. Without Gmail, I cannot imagine processing 100′s of emails effectively every day without breaking a sweat.

In this article let us review 15 awesome Gmail tips and tricks that will help you to manage your emails effectively.

3. Top 10 Gmail tips and hacks by David Chartier

Gmail offers a lot of flexibility when it comes to the way you manage your email. Innovative features like labels, a dedicated mobile phone client and rich script-ability via Firefox’s Greasemonkey plugin create a unique appeal for users from nearly all walks of life.

Since you can do so much with and to Gmail, I thought I would round up my favorite tips and hacks for users both old and new. Some of these are simple ideas for thinking about labels in a different way, while others add more powerful functionality for the most dedicated of Gmail ninjas. Of course, this list is by no means complete, so have at it in the comments with your own tips, scripts and workflows

I’ve used practically every Web-based e-mail program, from Hotmail to Yahoo to Chick Mail (seriously), and I have to say Gmail is awesome. But it could be better.

Here are a few tips to help you organize, optimize, and take control of your Gmail so you’ll spend less time sorting through your e-mail messages. (Don’t worry: “Use filters” isn’t one of them.)

If you’re one of Gmail’s 193 million users worldwide, you probably rely on the service—and its add-ons—every day. Popular among users for its customization features, Google (GOOG) constantly adds to its arsenal of Labs and brings new features mainstream to simplify processes and save users time.

Here are five more useful Gmail tips, including how to access multiple accounts in one browser, schedule time zone changes and how to opt out of annoying conversation threads.

6. 20 Essential Gmail Tips You Probably Don’t Use (but Should!) by Paul Lilly

Remember when webmail used to be synonymous with AOL? Boy has the Internet grown up since then, and lucky for us, a little company called Google came along and changed not just how we surf the web, but also how we communicate with each other. We’re of course referring to Gmail, Google’s nearly six-year-old webmail service that only recently shed its beta tag.

For most of you, we’re probably preaching to the choir and you already own at least one Gmail account, if not several. And with good reason, too. Google’s now-infamous email service offers oodles of storage space (over 7GB and counting), excellent spam detection, built-in chat, awesome search capabilities, a ton of customization options, and a whole lot more. But even with all that it offers out of the box, are you making the most out your Gmail account?

7. 11 Power Tips for Gmail by Matt Cutts

Considering that real Gmail users didn’t know about these options, I’m going to call them power tips.

Introduction

Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that develops, supports, and stewards legal and technical infrastructure that maximizes digital creativity, sharing, and innovation. Realizing the full potential of the internet — universal access to research, education, full participation in culture, and driving a new era of development, growth, and productivity.

Beginners Guide

1. Creative Commons: a user guide by Simone Aliprandi

Here is an operational manual which guides creators step by step in the world of Creative Commons licenses, the most famous and popular licenses for free distribution of intellectual products. Without neglecting useful conceptual clarifications, the author goes into technical details of the tools offered by Creative Commons, thus making them also understandable for total neophytes. This is a fundamental book for all those who are interested in the opencontent and copyleft world.

About Simone Aliprandi is an Italian lawyer and researcher who is constantly engaged in writing and consulting in the field of copyright and ICT law. He founded and still coordinates the Copyleft-Italia.it project and has published numerous books devoted to openculture and copyleft. This is his first publishing in English.

2. A citizen’s legal guide to using Creative Commons licenses

The Creative Commons license offers an excellent alternative to rigid, restrictive, one-size-fits-all copyright law. For many creators, default, “all rights reserved” copyright law[link] may not be the best choice, and we’ll discuss why below.

Remember, if you create a work [blog post, podcast, film, song, book, etc.] and you don’t choose an alternative to default copyright law such as a creative commons license or dedication to the public domain, you are stuck with default “protection.” It can be a benefit and a curse of copyright law that it gives you essentially a monopoly of over your work. This means that you are the only one, outside of users’ fair use[link] rights, who has the ability to copy, distribute, display, perform, and make derivatives. This may actually hurt your ability to communicate your work to the rest of the world.

3. A Dummies Guide to Choosing Creative Commons License For Your Own Work

You have seen Creative Commons licenses everywhere on the web including Flickr Photos, RSS feeds, blog sites, music distribution sites, internet videos, etc.

So when it comes to choosing a license for your own online work, which one should you choose ? Well, it depends on how you want others to use your creative work which could be pictures, music, videos or even a plain text blog post.

4. A Guide to Copyright and Creative Commons

The When I Have Time A Guide to Copyright and Creative Commons is a guide to help you understand your copyright options as an online content creator and publisher as well as how you can share and protect your work with the online world in a way that’s comfortable for you. This guide is not meant to be a legal guide or documentation.

5. A Quick Guide to Creative Commons Licenses

The internet has made it incredibly easy to copy content from authors and art from artists. Unfortunately, this lessens the value of their work and people freely steal others’ work and use it without properly crediting the original creator.

Fortunately, in recent years, a non-profit organization called Creative Commons has made it exceptionally easy for content creators and artists to license their work using a standardized set of licenses and for people who want to use them to then use them in the appropriate fashion.

Tips For Using LinkedIn For Business

1. The ultimate guide to LinkedIn by Lauren Fisher at Simplyzesty

Many people set up a profile on LinkedIn but don’t use it regularly, only returning when prompted by an email telling you someone is looking to connect. There are many great features in LinkedIn that you should be using, whether you’re job-hunting, looking for business or simply want to network online. It’s worth investing your time in LinkedIn – as with any social network you need to build up a community and following in order to maximise the benefits to you. Having used LinkedIn regularly, it can seem particularly daunting and the features that make it such a great business tool can be hard to find. We’ve put together top tips for using LinkedIn that will help you get the most out of the site.

2. Guide to Using LinkedIn to Sell More, Faster by Scott Allen

One of the most common questions I get asked is, “How can LinkedIn help me sell more?” LinkedIn isn’t just for job seekers and recruiters. And while trying to use LinkedIn as a cold-calling tool may not be very effective, there are several ways that you can use LinkedIn to support the entire sales lifecycle: lead generation, sales acceleration, solution delivery and customer relationship.

3. Amateur’s Guide to Using LinkedIn.com by Pamela DeLoatch

The phrase “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know” is clearly the premise of Linkedin.com. Take friends, family and associates, and expand it to the people they know, and so on, to eventually form a huge group of contacts.

4. Ten Ways to Use LinkedIn by Guy Kawasaki

Most people use LinkedIn to “get to someone” in order to make a sale, form a partnership, or get a job. It works well for this because it is an online network of more than 8.5 million experienced professionals from around the world representing 130 industries. However, it is a tool that is under-utilized, so I’ve compiled a top-ten list of ways to increase the value of LinkedIn.

5. The “Don’t Do It” Guide To Using LinkedIn at Applicant

The other day we got an email asking – “I update my linkedin status regularly and add many people each day. This approach works wonders for me on Facebook and Twitter but it’s not working on LinkedIn. What am I doing wrong?” Although the question might surprise some of us, we need to realize there are many people who still use LinkedIn the way they use Facebook, MySpace, Twitter or other social networking tools. LinkedIn is a networking tool for professionals and for anyone who wants to showcase their skills and find opportunities via this wonderful platform.

Wikipedia is a free, web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia project supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Its 17 million articles (over 3.5 million in English) have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world, and almost all of its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the site. Wikipedia was launched in 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger and has become the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet, ranking seventh among all websites on Alexa and having 365 million readers.

Guides & Tips

1. How to Use Wikipedia By Wendy Boswell, About.com Guide

The very nature of a “wiki” is that it can be edited by anyone who has the proper permissions; and because Wikipedia is completely open, ANYONE can edit ANYTHING (within reason). This is both the strength and weakness of Wikipedia; strength, because an open system invites many qualified, intelligent individuals; and weakness, because that same open system is easy to corrupt with bad information.

2. Your Guide to Wikipedia Tools & Resources By Amit Agarwal, Labnol

Since its launch in 2001, the global army of passionate and dedicated Wikipedians have created close to 3 million articles on the English version of Wikipedia encyclopedia alone. Britannica Encyclopedia has about about half a million topics only though it has been around since 1768.

3. How to use Wikipedia for research at Helium

Many people shy away from Wikipedia once they find out that it can be edited by anyone. However, if you’ve ever tried making an article on yourself, or adding a ridiculous fact onto the entry on George Bush, you’ll know how quickly any unsourced lies are removed by the loyal (and somewhat fierce) Wikipedia editors. The fact that Wikipedia usually requires information to be backed up by references also ensures that the content is safe. However, some errors can sometimes get included (as they can in a published book, also) and so it is best to verify your research from another source if necessary.

—-

About Kindle – Kindle is a convenient, portable reading device with the ability to wirelessly download books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs. Books download in less than 60 seconds. Designed to provide an exceptional reading experience, Kindle utilizes a revolutionary new display technology called electronic paper. Reading Kindle’s screen is as sharp and natural as reading ink on paper–and nothing like the strain and glare of a computer screen.

We wanted Kindle to be completely mobile and simple to use for everyone, so we made it wireless. Kindle (Wi-Fi) allows you to connect your Kindle over a Wi-Fi network, and Kindle 3G (Free 3G + Wi-Fi) allows you the choice of connecting either via Free 3G or Wi-Fi. There are no confusing service plans, yearly contracts, or monthly wireless bills.

Android was introduced to smart phone world already some time ago. And still, every year millions of new users come on board as they buy new Android powered device. Great number of such users are meeting Android smart phone for the first time. So we have created short but very useful list of beginner level tutorials for Android users. Give them a try and let us know what do you think.

1. Beginners Guide To Android By Hemorrdroids.net

Android was released 3 years ago this November. Up until now, it was generally chosen by people who knew what Android was and bought their phone because Android was the OS used. Now, Android is fast becoming a standard in the way that Symbian was 3 years ago.

This means there are plenty of people now choosing their phone because they like the look of it, or they like the price or the hardware specs and perhaps don’t even know what Android is. This is a guide for these people. It may be of no use to you, but you might know someone who will benefit! Read on to start learning!

2. The Beginner’s Guide to Android By bestandroidappsreview.com

So you’ve picked up your new Android phone and you’re ready to dive right in! But like with any new gadget, you have unanswered questions about the features of Android and that powerful new device you’ve just booted up. And of course there are always unknown tips, tricks, and tutorials that you wish you’d known about beforehand. Luckily, we’ve got all the info that will put you on the fast track to becoming an Android expert!

3. Welcome to Android: A beginner’s guide to freedom By Androidandme.com

So you’ve scoured the forums, read every review on every tech blog, and have finally decided to make the big jump. You are now a new Android user. Congrats! Welcome to a new and exciting world that has (almost) no bounds. But now what? You’ve setup your phone, synced to your Gmail account, and have a fresh new home screen staring at you. While it may have limitless potential, Android can be a bit daunting to the new user.

4. Google Android: a beginner’s guide By CNET Yahoo!7 Australia

Google’s Android operating system is the new kid on the block, which is seeing an incredible surge in popularity thanks to the support it is receiving from manufacturers. In Australia the range of Android phones is growing faster than any other, and include models across all pricing tiers, from top-shelf handsets to prepaid models as well.

5. Android Phones: A Beginner’s Guide to Google Android

To the average user an Android phone is, in a few basic ways, similar to the iPhone. The key difference between Android phones and the Apple iPhone range is that Apple controls and produces both the iPhone hardware and software whereas Android is a piece of software (operating system) that a phone manufacturer like LG, HTC or Samsung then licenses to incorporate as the core software in their phones.
