1. 3D Modeling a Human Head

Human head is one of the most difficult subjects to model believably. The structure and form of a human face is so familiar to everyone that even a small fault in the 3D model is easy to notice.

This tutorial covers the 3D modeling of a human head in 3D Studio MAX using polygons. The head is modeled roughly using polygons. The head will get its final form when Meshsmooth modifier is added to it. When the Meshsmooth modifier is added to it the face becomes a so called subdivision surface. Subdivision surface means a surface which is created by dividing the original surface into smaller polygons. Meshmooth modifier does exactly this. This way the rough surface can be made rounder and smoother.

2. Making a Sideshow Bob

Conceptualization is most important. because at this moment we must have very in clear that what we are going to construct… soon to pass the modeling and to be constructing mesh basing to us on the concept, is something as well as one devises in a design project. If you dont have this, you dont have nothing.. Definitively it not going to work… the idea is the Motor of all project and without this, believe me is not going to arrive at any port. It is here where all the questions, are answered…..

At the time of beginning, to start of a model is best one has idea that it forms has and as is seen. Thus of was in sideshow bob. I have toy bob which I photographed in its views, in front, flank and above, that helps like kick off to star in the model.

3. Rigging Mechanical Robot

As I promised before, I will wrote about Gundam tutorial, from modeling, texturing, and rigging. So, this is the LAST tutorial: How to rig a mechanical robot like Gundam RX-78-2. There are many ways to make a poseable robot Some people prefer just to use pivot point and link one body part to another. Others using bones or skeletons to move body parts. This tutorial will show you how to rig a human like robot. As you can see, Gundam RX-78-2 has body parts and joints similar to human. Surely, you can use technique described here to any robot.

4. Human Character Modeling – Hand

In this part of the tutorial series we are going to learn to model a human hand using 3ds max. If you have watched the earlier parts of the tutorial series you would be able to understand the flow and basic thing while modeling in 3ds max. Ok, let us get started.

I have got these reference images from Google Images, I normally find ver good search result on Google images and find it very useful and helpful as it is a great place to find human anatomy references for 3D and traditional artists. You will find great deal of photo references for modeling and texturing your 3D character. You can also get reference images from many other sources also, you have to go to Google and search for human character reference images and will get hell lot of results.

5. 3D Monster

This is the first tutorial of my four part series dealing with character animation. These tutorials are targeted for beginners wanting to learn the basics of organic modeling, uvw mapping, texturing, rigging, and creating a cute 3d monster. In this first part we’re going to create the geometry and you’ll learn about polygon modeling and subdivision surfaces. I’ll do my best to keep things as simple as possible.

6. Making of The Phoenix Building – 3dsmax

In this tutorial I will go through my usual workflow with simple steps (trying to make it as simple as possible), to build a scene from preparation phase of the project (Pre-Pro) to the final render.

7. Making of the Toilet by RenjuBosco, India

Hi, every one. My name is RenjuBosco, a game artist from India. I would like to thank CGArena and the sponsors for giving this opportunity to do the making of my image done for accident challenge which won 2nd prize in the competition, it was a great competition and I learned a lot. This is an insight to my workflow; hope it will help some of you guys out there.

8. Creating a real-time game character

I wanted to show how I go about creating characters for computer games, so I created a bust of a fictional character to show you how it can be done. In this example I use 3ds Max, ZBrush and Photoshop, but the workflow is pretty universal and would work for most game engines and 3D software.

I have worked with real-time rendering for the past 10 years, but it have always been inside some in-house developed engine, like IO Interactive’s Glacier engine. So I thought I would try to play around with the real-time DirectX® 9.0 viewport render options within 3ds Max, just for fun.

9. Texturing a Human Face

In this 2 hour, multi-part video tutorial, you will follow professional Game artist and teacher, Dan Cox, as he gives insight into his own thought process and workflow of how to go about unwrapping and texturing an existing human face. The techniques and theories that Dan teaches can be used in either video game or film work.

The first video will be 30 minutes dedicated to the process of unwrapping a human face in 3D Studio Max 9 (although the theories can be applied to any UVW unwrapping tools). The second part of the series will be an hour and a half, and will cover the process of texturing a face with very little or no photo texture, in Photoshop CS3.

10. 3D Character Eyes

Ever wanted to create those classic Pixar or Dreamworks style eyes?…

Learn how to model the basic geometry using simple poly-modelling including all of the essential parts which are crucial for achieving this effect. ..

But what eye tutorial would be complete without some rigging to give that all important movement and animation…

11. Re-Topologize a Game-Ready Alien Head in Blender

The retopology tools in Blender allow you to take a high-resolution model and very quickly create a low-poly version of that model. You can then use this new low-poly mesh to easily generate a normal map, displacement map, or anything else you may need from the high-poly version.

This tutorial introduces you to the basics of retopo in Blender, including how to use the extrude feature, the paint tool, and some of the quirks of retopo in general. Retopologizing a model.

12. Head modeling with 3dsmax by Hatice Bayramoglu

A very high quality detailed modeling tutorial that start from a sketch and conclude with a finished 3d head model made by me. This tutorial will describe how I modeled my character from a sketch. I will not go into great details, as I’m assuming that the reader has some basic knowledge of modeling in any 3d software.

In this tutorial I will go through a simple, yet effective way to setup a lighting rig using 3ds max and vray.

2. 3D Studio Max- Basic Lighting

By Boblit (contact: pwnedlikealifenoob@gmail.com) Lighting is one of the most important aspects in 3D Studio Max. This tutorial will tell you the basics of lighting and how it affects your scene. This first picture is of a simple face rendered with one spot light facing it. There is no shadow and it looks pretty flat.

3. Vray Basic HDRI

Well got some time here, so a new tutorial, still basic stuff but for those know don’t know.

4. Vray Color bleeding

This time ill show you a couple ways to get rid of the color bleeding in Vray.
First of all what is color bleeding? well color bleeding is an effect of the GI bounches in vray so that the bounched light also bounches color. so for examples if you have a white room with an red floor. the whole scene would look redish.

5. V-Ray Tutorial – Studio Lighting (3ds Max)

In this tutorial i will tell you the method of studio lighting.
For the rendering i used Vray 1.5rc3, the latest version of the program.
This famous chair called “Corbusier” was modeled in 3ds max 9.
With the knowledge of this tutorial you will be able to present your models
in a more ambitious way than before.. and especially helpful for guys into 3d architectural modeling…… 😉

This tutorial explains how to set up sunlight and VRay light to light up a building’s interior.

7. Lighting with mental ray – 3dsmax Tutorial

On the F.D.A. gallery you can see a few examples of designs of our students who have used this technique.

Since our students need a effective way to display their concepts and ideas, our teachers have developed many tutorials in order to give them an additional tool that every designer should have. This tutorial explains all steps to illuminate an object with a technique which simulates the illumination techniques of a photo studio.

Before we begin it is very important to inform you that we will use “Mental Ray” as render engine (version 8 and 9 of 3D Studio Max).

Mental Ray is a very stable render engine and it allows you to have very realistic renderings. Since we are using Mental Ray for this tutorial it is very important to use “real dimensions” for all the objects that we have to create. Otherwise the result will not be realistic. It means that you have to go to CUSTOMIZE -> UNITS SETUP and choose the units that you want to use. In any case you should get used to create objects with their real dimensions so that you get a feeling for correct dimensions and proportions.

The first step to do is to create an “environment object” (it is similar to the rooms which are used in the professional field of photography) on which later we will place our object to illuminate (this is ideal for product/industrial design and furniture design).

8. Using VRay Global Illumination GI (Realistic Lighting)

This short tutorial on how to use VRay’s Global Illumination feature will show you one method for creating realistic looking lighting for a scene. VRay is a very powerful external render engine for Max made by Chaos Group. VRay has many features including the ability to to physically accurate full global illumination, advanced material shaders and enhancements for speeding up rendering time. You can check the Chaos Group website to learn more about the various VRay features.

9. Illumination Tutorial (3dsmax MentalRay)

This is one of my tutorials which I’ve written for my students at the Florence Design Academy (www.florencedesignacademy.com). This tutorial is about the illumination of a room, illuminated by sunlight coming through a window ( ideal for living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms ).

10. Caustic Rendering Tutorial with 3ds max 8

Caustics are really great light effects that you can observe in liquids, glass objects and gems. We are able to simulate this effect with 3D Studio Max perfectly. This tutorial about Caustics will work only if you enable “Mental Ray” ! (This tutorial was made in Max 8).

In this tutorial I will go through all the steps that we usually do when I’m asked to do an “exterior night-rendering”.
In order to follow it you need to know the basics of 3ds max and vray.

17. Light and Render an Arch-Viz Style Outdoor Scene with V-Ray and 3ds Max

Apart from the default render engines that come with 3ds Max, several extra renderers are available. Of all the 3rd party renders on the market, however, V-Ray has proven time and time again to be the most popular. In this tutorial, you will be introduced to lighting and rendering an outdoor scene with V-Ray in 3DS Max.

This tutorial will walk you through the process of taking a finished model from it’s default rendered appearance, to a correctly set-up, and realistically lit final result. You will learn the basic V-Ray settings, that should always be set up for any scene, how to use a Gamma correct workflow, how to set lighting and global illumination settings, and how to optimize those settings. Note: This tutorial is meant to introduce a user, familiar with basic rendering in 3DS Max, to using V-Ray in a correct workflow. It will not teach you how to model the scene used in the images, as that is not our focus.

The software used will be 3DS Max 2009 together with V-Ray 1.5, but using another version of 3DS Max should not be a problem, although minor differences in settings might be necessary. You can download the project file from the following link if you would like to look at (or play with) the settings, but you will need to have the above mentioned software to open it.

Whenever you see highly realistic images of CG cars, you may think that it is an incredibly difficult process to arrive at such a high quality result…this is not actually the case. In this tutorial, Sumeet Gupta will show you how easy it can be to create a photorealistic car render using 3DS Max and Vray, as long as you know the right steps.

For this tutorial, Sumeet used “Dodge Viper”, but these steps will let you can achieve similar result using any high-rez car model.

2. Audi TT 2008 3D modeling from A to Z – 3DS Max

– In this tutorial we will model a Audi TT 2008. Below, i have prepared the document. You can download it from HERE (its for 3ds max 2009). In that document you have the blueprint sliced and the planes in 3ds max. You need to put those blueprints on those planes and we can start to model. I think that is better if anyone will download my file because we will have the same documents.

3. The Making of Maybach 57 3D model

I made this image with 3ds Max R7 and rendered it with V-Ray the background in the image is a photo, anyway I made this Maybach 57 model a while ago but it was rendered at first with a white background and subtle reflections , as you can see it doesn’t look as realistic as the final image with the background , I wanted to test with the possibility of rendering cars with a photo composted as a background, but I was surprised by how easily you could do it and how much better it will look like.

Modeling this car was old school, so I will just cut straight to rendering it which you will see was very simple but the trick was to take care of all the little parameters

4. Basic Car Rendering setup with Brazil r/s by Emre Gorenemregoren

(This tutorial wont use HDRI) important note: This settings will be startup for the render , you will have some trial & error for better results.

Ok , here is the first tutorial, I will try to keep it simple and short.. Its not so hard and after this tutorial you will see that it takes only 5 mins to setup a scene.. As the topic says this is a car rendering so you will need car model to render.. Fot this lesson, I will use an Audi TT

5. Z4 Unleashed by Mohamed Abuyhia, Egypt

The snatch of this car was and binding by chains, but Z4 can breaking this chain, so Z4 unleashed.

Hello, my name is Mohammed Abuyhia from Alexandria Egypt. This is the first time for me in the cars modeling and I thought that it was complicated but after trying this I found it so simple so, I did this tutorial which rapidly explain how I format the car, textures, materials and the rendering lastly.

6. BMW 1 Series Modeling from A to Z

Hi. Let’s start another amazing tutorial. In this tutorial I will show yo how to model an BMW 1 Series (2008). This tutorial will be very detailed, like Audi TT tutorial. If you know the basics of 3D modeling then you should find this tutorial very easy to follow. You should know how to give a chamfer, an extrude, move an object in the center of viewport by putting all values from “Move” to 0. I won’t say thousands of times “click on the little square from chamfer”, or “… from extrude” just “Chamfer the object with *value*” because you should know those things.

7. Making Of Ford Mustang Fastback 65 by Pâşlea Paul

I decided to work on the Ford Fastback because I love the classic look of the car, and that is what I wanted to achieve – a feeling of class and style. I had a rough idea in my mind of the final image, the colours, and a studio render with maybe some different camera angles. But it was really the process of creating the car and trying out different things that led to the final result that I am talking about today.

I hope you will like this making of, and perhaps you’ll find something interesting in it for yourself.

8. Making Of ‘Alfa Romeo Competizione C8 Spyder Studio by Arturo Garcia

The project, Alfa Romeo C8 Spyder, started as a personal challenge in order to improve my modelling techniques and final renders. The modelling of cars has always attracted and fascinated me, and this is what I specialise in. I have created some car models and the treatment of each finished model is better than the previous one.

I choose this model for this personal project because, from the very first time I saw it in a car magazine, my attention was simply drawn to its form. It decided it was time to bring it into the world of 3D!

9. 3Ds Max: Simple Car Rig Tutorial

Software used is 3Ds Max 2009. Please watch in HD for full enjoyment!

10. Mazda RX-8 Project Overview

This tutorial will show you how to create Mazda RX-8 model using 3D Studio Max.

11. Spline Car Modeling

PLEASE MAKE THE RHINO HEAD TUTORIAL THAT SHIPS WITH MAX BEFORE STARTING!! That is the tutorial about making a head of a rhinoceros (under F1), and not the tutorial about a head in Rhino3D! 🙂 Or else this tutorial will go way too fast.

12. Automotive Concept Development by Autodesk

The goal for this project was to produce a fairly detailed sketch render of an open-wheel, mid engine sports car with deadly accurate perspective.

Instead of spending hours trying to work freehand lines into perfection I decide to throw together a quick concept model so that I could create an underlay for the final image.

13. Making of Nissan 350Z by Bonar Siregar

Hello guys, my name is Bonar Siregar (Egar). I was born in Jakarta, Indonesia in 07 October 1985. Im still new to this field (3d) about a year(+) experience. Im quite surprised at receiving an email, a request from 3dtotal asking me to make a making of about my Nissan 350Z Nemesis. So, I’m truly glad and honored to write about it, even though this project was made at the end of 2004 (at that time I was still learning 3D for about 5-6 months.)

The name Nemesis, inspired from the decals Che Guevara* a revolutionar, that I put on the hood of the car. Then the Tribal design was inspired from the Ches’s hair.

So here ill explain step by step, the making of or maybe I can say the progress on how I went about creating this 🙂

14. Making of Bugatti Veyron

Bugatti Veyron – One of the fastest and popular speedcar…. This 3D Model was created in 2 Days completely. I used 3DS Max for this. I had seen some of the wallpapers of this car and was so inspired that the same night i began to work on this model.

This model has has been very popular to the 3D Community so I decided to put out the tutorial / the making of Bugatti Veyron.

15. Seat Leon by David Melchor Díaz

This is a quick tutorial that explains all the process to make this composition. We´re going to see how to make the model, materials, lighting, render parameters and finishig the image with photoshop.

• Modeling the auto bodywork.

This model has the minimun polys possible and a Mesh Smooth modifier applied to smooth the surface.
