1.  Toshiba BDX2700 Blu-ray Player Review by EnGadget

One of the best things the HD DVD camp had going for it during the format war was great hardware from Toshiba. And after the war was over many assumed Toshiba would just ignore the Blu-ray player market entirely and focus on other areas. Of course that wasn’t the case and the idea of a Blu-ray player from Toshiba has always intrigued us, which is why we jumped at the chance to review one. Sadly, the BDX2700 reviewed on the next page doesn’t share much with its red counterparts, but it isn’t all bad.

2. Toshiba BDX2700 by Cnet

The Toshiba BDX2700 is currently a little cheaper than other midrange Blu-ray players and includes 7.1 analog outputs, but otherwise there’s little reason to favor it over faster models with better features. When Toshiba rolled out its first Blu-ray player, the BDX2000, in late 2009, it seemed like a begrudging move by the former backer of the HD DVD format, with the player lacking streaming and premium features that were then standard on other midrange players. When the BDX2700 was announced at CES 2010, it was obvious Toshiba was ready to take the former rival format seriously, with the newer player offering built-in Wi-Fi, 7.1 analog outputs and suite of streaming features that includes Netflix, Vudu, Pandora, and Blockbuster.

The new BDX2700 is the step-up model to the BDX2500 that Toshiba released earlier this year. Its primary addition is integrated WiFi. Neither model supports 3D playback; for that, you’ll have to wait for the BDX3000, due later this year. Toshiba sent us a sample of the BDX2700 to test its performance, but let’s start with a general overview of the player’s features. This Profile 2.0 player supports BD-Live Web functionality and BonusView/picture-in-picture playback, and it offers both onboard decoding and bitstream output of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. The BDX2700 includes Toshiba’s Web platform, which on paper isn’t quite as extensive as you’ll find elsewhere, but it does offer three video-on-demand options–Netflix, VUDU and Blockbuster–as well as Pandora Internet radio. While the Toshiba platform doesn’t directly include Picasa, Flickr, Twitter, Facebook or various Web widgets, the VUDU Apps service does provide access to these features. So, the only major Web omission is YouTube. Also, the BDX2700 does not support DLNA media streaming, a feature you can now find on many Blu-ray players.
